    Default JDM Trout Reel

I’m looking for some opinions on a good(or great) trout reel. I fish mostly small rivers and streams, I have a few Iprimi rods and other USDM ultralights. Lots of trout magnets, small soft plastics and some small trout plugs.

I splurged and ordered a Great Hunting GH51-4ULS, it may not even fit my application but I’ve always lusted after it. I’m looking for something to complement it, I may already have it, but I can’t say any of these really impress me.

This is what I currently have

    Zenon 1000S
    21 Presso LT 1000-SP
    24 Luvias ST SF2000SSH
    24 Gekkabijin X1000-SP
    25 Iprimi 1000 (incoming)
    21 Soare XR 500

I don’t know what will pair best with the rod, what size etc. Maybe it’s a smaller Luvias r something totally different.

    Thanks for any input

I think the Presso 1000 would pair great with it.
If you cast it they will come.

That would be ideal. I have the Presso set up with some Ester line for panfish and the plan was to use it on a float set up, but I realized that doesn't really fit most of my fishing, locations, depth etc just don't lend themselves to a float.

I had to see the line go to waste, but its probably my first choice for the set up.

I’m also a Presso fan. The ones I use are the shallow spool models. Weigh nothing and when paired with a good rod the day is easy.

I started off with the Zenon 1000 on it, 4# mono. Fished a lot of 1.5 and 2.5g JDM Shimano spoons. Rod feels great and performs very well even down to 1g. I just never loved the Zenon. In a moment of weakness I added an Airity 1000 ST SF to the cart when I was refilling on spoons. Just spooled it up, hope to get it out this weekend. Seems like the perfect balance on the rod and it’s sooooo smooth.

A little off topic, this is the first time I’ve fished spoons. They’re awesome, and about the cheapest lures I’ve found which is another benefit. They may fare even better on a bfs set up where line twist is a non issue, so far they haven’t been bad on the spinning gear.

    I googled the Great Hunting GH51-4ULS rod . I wasn’t familiar with it .
Wow ! Nice looking little stick !
I am a big fan of shorter rods myself.
I’d put the Soare 500 XR on it and enjoy !

Yup, the new XR 500 caught my eye. Price went up quite a bit from the last gen. I have a '21 on a PureLure (ali express) telescopic UL that I started taking on hikes. The combo is surprisingly nice, and casts 1.5-2g way better than I would have expected. Just has a bit too much backbone/extra-fast action.

The reel has been great, ideal size for backpacking and small streams
