11/3/2025 Unusual Problem Most Crappie Fisherman Never Face
Launched at 10 am due to cold morning and the water temp was 62 F on Bayou Lacombe. Windy and very little tidal movement. Perfect conditions after a full moon on a clear night. Headed south towards Lake P which is an extension of the Gulf of America for those who did not know. Saw some schools of wolf pack fish that I thought were stripers of small bass near the structure I was targeting. When I pitched towards them the pack turned and nearly pulled my 11 ft jig pole spooled with 6 lb test out of my fist. Once I landed the hard fighting fish I knew even though I was over a mile north of Lake P that I had to head north to find sacalait due to salt water intrusion.
I did catch a few more and snapped a few pics before releasing the speckle trout back into the brackish water just for the fun of it. Headed back north towards the launch and did manage to catch 6 thick Blacks for dinner.
When the salt water pushes in land the sacalait have to head up stream towards the fresher water.

Speckle Trout are delicious as far as saltwater species go.
in fact prior to Hurricane Katrina 20 years ago my ice chest and freezer was full of Red Drum and Speckle Trout filets.
However, once we moved away from lower St. Bernard Parish to north of Lake P I fished fresh water exclusively. I find Sacalait are the tastiest fish and can be prepared many ways.
I returned the speckle trout to the brackish water only because they must be at least 13” inches order to legally harvest and the school I ran across were shorter than that.

Love me some trout too! Fed my kids lots of them when they were much younger. Better dipped and fried in an electric skillet. They even liked the dash of cayenne I put in. Last year I pulled up to some old dock posts in mosquito lagoon and had 5 trout over 19” in about 20 minutes. They make for a good day when they’re in the mood.

I’ve been tempted to try to hang a few speckled trout on my jig pole when a make inshore trip to the La marsh to chase the reds and trout on spinning gear. But figure I would lose too many to the sharp teeth. I guess a heavier leader would work.
