Sometimes I hit spots just to see if I can ketch crappie in extremely adverse conditions .
In this scenario, the wind speed was sustaining itself at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up over 40 mph one day this week.
So , even though we all know that with the temperatures plummeting as the north wind howls and the sky is blue as it can be and the lake has big beautiful whitecaps, that the ketchn of crappie is likely going to close to a big fat goose egg, so why not go out to see if there is a way to get them to bite in these types of conditions.
Knowing how the predator prey relationship is critical to success and is the key in many cases . So we have a wind going one direction and it is creating a heavy current in the opposite direction !
It truly does not get more challenging to ketch crappie in these conditions my friends.....
Here in lies the technique employed on this visit to that dock . the jig HAD to be pitched down wind and then bounced and hopped across the bottom at the SAME speed as the current was flowing , any deviation to this presentation was NOT going to get bit for sure .
Trying to stand up and not get blown into the lake was quite a challenge, as was trying to detect bites and keep all these things that must happen going on at the same time. There are pretty much always ways to get crappie to bite in almost every possible situation and scenario out there .Even hunkered down on cover on the bottom they often times just can't resist hitting a bait , they are programed to eat nonstop .....
I have included a screnshot off the goggle maps wth the wind in blue and the current in yellow to help you better understand this scenario , the waves hit the enclosed shoreline and created a strong current back up the opposite bank ......
KABOOM is always near and so is a limit on your lunchbreak if you wrap your mind around what it will take to get bites from crappie .....just saying![]()

Nice mess of slabs for such a windy day. Conditions like that will keep me home 95% of the time. Your experience with touch conditions paid off big time.
Very nice Ketch. I’m like Jim those conditions keep me home….
