Our school district had a two-day “fall break” where we were out of school yesterday and today, so because we held our football practices in the morning, I was able to get out in the basin for a few hours yesterday afternoon. The Atchafalaya River has been really low, so it was pretty hard to get into the place I wanted to fish. There was only one other truck with a trailer at the landing, and when I got through the cypress swamp and into place I wanted to fish, there wasn’t another boat anywhere. Started off kind of slow because the fish were holding so tightly to the stumps, I was having trouble dropping a jig that close under a cork with the wind that was blowing, so I ended up breaking out my 13’ jig pole and lowering a 1/64 oz jig with a black and chartreuse crappie magnet right above their heads, and that did the trick. Caught several other small fish (and a bunch of small bream and goggle eye), but the attached picture is what I kept to clean. Going to give the fillets to a guy at school who’s been asking me “if those fish I catch are good to eat?”…lol. Had at least three that were 14”.

Sounds like a good day on the water, and what an awesome gesture of giving the fish to a classmate. Who knows, you may have just gotten that classmate into crappie fishing...Good on you young man...

That’s a respectable bag of fish. Glad you got a chance to go, sometimes hard to get the time. Short trip equals quick recharge.

Nice reward for putting in the work to get to your spot. Good on you for sharing it. Hope you can get out again soon.

That is a very good picture of why I fish for Black Crappie, look how thick this catch is on average. Great post.
I'm the head football coach of a rural 2A high school, and the guy I'm giving them to is actually a teacher and our certified athletic trainer. He's never eaten sacalait before and has been asking me about how I cook them.

We work 7 days a week during the season, but with early film swapping and current software, I'm able to take a few hours on Sunday morning to get out if the weather cooperates. You're right about the "recharge". With how busy it is during the week, I really forward to a couple of hours of peace on the water.
