It is in my opinion, just very highly visible to fish in general and something that small is typically on the menu even for bluegill.
The next possibility we have explored with this color is the light spectrum from a lower angle sunshine…it might matter
just maybe it matters in other locations too , just at different times than here …
It could also be the fall feed up and everything they see , gets ate ….and again…seeing it ….
is key

Orange works here too buddy. I make a baby shad with bright orange back & a bright yellow body somewhat like Bobby Garlands mud dauber & it works great a big bunch of the time.
what is the water clarity like when they hit orange
Slightly better than the typical summer pea soup we have here , greenish and less particulate matter in most spots, not winter time emerald green and clear though

I bet that is a smoking bait , I had some that were built like that back when and they ate them well
