the reduction of the vegetation can have tremendous effects on the entire water body , we "had" a lake here that the state owns and they decided it had to much vegetation and sprayed the heck out of it ..... it "was" well known for beautiful clear green water and monster bluegill and 5 lb. and up bass right off the bank year round .....
2 years after that episode , it became full of catfish and crappie and now the water looks like it has rained recently year round , just another mudhole ......mind you this ....I saw the same thing done on another smaller water body and it has turned into a waste of time and used to be a hammer festival for big black crappie .....
copper something er other I think they used on the small water body , the hoa decided to make it all pretty .....they cut down all the cat tails and drug out all the fallen willows as well and in a matter on months it was over ....

But the damage was done. The environmental impact was done. We will never learn! Now I’m far from being a tree hugger, but I have learned when dealing with man made chemicals and medicine’s, we are playing with disaster.
As a kid, I recall a guy that came around with a powder ant poison that you sprinkled it on the bed and it started killing ants on contact. Worked well. But his claim was it wouldn’t hurt anything else. He would even eat it claiming it wouldn’t hurt humans. A year later he died from some foreign poisoning that they couldn’t determine what it was. Oops again!
I don’t know for sure what happened to the quail but that was a passion I had too that is no more. It just seemed odd that farming practices for soybeans changed during that time of decline too. It stinks trust me when something like that has been lost.
I just hope that someone will listen to the Rojo’s out there. You can make a hole in vegetation and catch fish. But you can’t catch any fish if they ain’t no fish.
But trust me, when it’s gone, it’s gone.
If we look hard enough, there is always something in nature naturally made that will battle other things of nature. But it’s all done in time not like snapping your fingers. That’s where we get in trouble. I have now said enough. When will they start listening to those who spend most of their waking hours fishing?

the quail likely got that weird eye worm thing , we always thought it was fire ants or coons or hogs or something else ....
one thing I have seen recently though that made me smile was a tiny covey of them ....sure surprised me .....

I'm an old Bird hunter too. We heard it was ants back in the day also. I'm glad I don't have the 12 bird dogs to care for anymore. I will say this - when I fed them JOY dog food I had Zero Vet bills.

I still try to bird hunt. I have been bird hunting since 7-8th grade and I am 57. I have only been without a Pointer for 6 months of my life. I have to travel more and more each year. I just got a 7week old Pointer pup Sunday from Illinois. I have a few covies but nothing like it used to be. Rojo the most I ever had was 6 at one time. Rojo you mentioned the vet bills. I have a 10 yr old that is in great shape, but got a brain tumor pushing on her pituitary gland 2 yrs ago. I gave her fenbendazole(Safeguard) this spring and she is still alive and I think I will get to hunt her this fall. My vet thought she would have been put down several months back in the spring. She is looking great.....

My best dog was a Visla, I had a few but my old dog was a one of a kind. She developed a rare bone cancer that no skeleton samples of the disease existed in the Vet schools around here. I had to put her down (cried like I lost a child) and donated her to MS State Vet school who divided up her bones and sent them to Vet schools in TX and Alabama as well as keeping some for themselves. I had 5 of the 8 all time Purina Pointers in the last 100 years in my bloodlines. Riggins White Knight, Evolution, Miller's Cloud, Miller's Silver Bullet, Guardrail, Rail Dancer, etc. Using Beeper collars you could top a hill to find 4 to 5 of the dogs in a line backing the point. When my dogs were pups I taught each one to back a white 5 gallon bucket. Of course they learn quickly a "Point Beep" means birds were close so who ever pointed the Wrecking Crew would come running. 2 Went to the King Ranch when I gave it up.

Being at the King Ranch is something special. I became friends of Hoyle Eaton in his later years before he died. He was the trainer/trailer of Riggins White Knight, Red Water Rex, Rexs Cherokee Jake and 1 more. Hoyle is in the Hall of Fame. He had a dog Sir Lancelot, that I bred 2 of my females to. They were some great dogs. I like all of the blood you mentioned, except not a big fan of Miller dogs, even though they come off of Riggins White Knight breeding.

You reminded me, I had Red Water Rex too. Memories now. I have a video of a Millers Silver Bullet puppy running by a quail, when he gets the scent he turns 180 degrees and points while still sliding backwards in the pine straw. The Millers dogs I had were almost all white, Lemon colored just a bit on the ears and head. Very easy to see from the ATV's.

Rojo, I picked up a pup from the middle of IL last Sunday. She is 8 weeks old tomorrow. Nice looking pup. Most of you do not know this, but my bride passed in her sleep back on Dec 13. I found her cold and stiff on Sat morn and it has been a LOT to get used to. A week after she passed, I had to put down my 7yr old Pointer. I have 2 older dogs, but not sure on them this year. One had brain tumors I have cured her from, but not sure on her behavior yet. I think the pup is going to help. We were married 24 yrs and no children. Boy did we laugh. Every day and most every hour!!!!!!! We LAUGHED..... I have bought a boat since. Been on the water a few times with it. Back to working quite a bit. I hope this week I get to go w/ a guy crappie fishing on Normandy. Hopefully he will show me better than what I know!!!!!

Sorry to hear about your wife my friend. A new Pup can sure take your mind off other things or you have messes to clean up all over the house. A outing fishing while learning something new helps too. Best of luck on the trip!
