    Default What beats .......

Your 5 year old grandson, you been mentoring since he was 2, hammering fish like he is pro .....
pretty much absolutely nothing in these parts .
My grandson hung around with us for 4 days last weekend and to be very sure , that little kid is just absolutely the hammer on the fish .
He broke his rod hoisting a big slab the day we visited my buds place west of town after he been ketchn the fire out of them for an hour or so .....
told him oh well bro , looks like you are retired for this visit .....
but no worries my bud we will get you a new set up from Walmart when we get back to town, for the next time we head out ....
Of course my wife was in the are YOU CRAZY mode ....? ( pretty silly question if you are talking to me I just might add )
You have a cabinet in the garage FULL of rods , just give him one of those ....
so the next day into the cabinet we went , found us a chart rod and put the red reel off the broken one on it .....he was pleased with the "new" set up and I assured him we would test it very soon .
Well it rained for 4 straight days here off and on and kept us from doing our fireworks on the 4th ,so on the 5th, after karate class and tap dance class .....off we went for some of that there
    DOUBLE KABOOM time ....
rolled up to light rain after running thru several downpours and went right to the water . the green rod came out and it began , I set his float short , the fish were in the upper water column . He just looks at his float in a hawk like fashion , never blinks and don't EVEN look away ....
and the hammer began , he started hooking fish like one of them there edited fishing videos ...
Just absolutely wearing them out , catfish , bass, crappie , bluegill and red ear and EVEN got him a giant golden shiner too
He started with a Jungle Jim ducktail jig and then all the sudden towards the end of the visit , he wanted to change jigs , i was like why bro , that jig is just on fire ....
he was in that there because I want to mode and picked out a wore down orange plastic ....
then proceeded to tell me he didn't need a nibble and got all serious ....
at his age minus a big man child ego , he follows fish ketchn instructions well, but in this case he insisted he DID NOT NEED A CRAPPIE NIBBLE to ketch them ....
mind you this part folks , crappie ketchn can be VERY specific, certain things sometimes have to be just so so or it's a no go .
this episode included a trick that few employ, its the walk em down method .....if done properly and under the right conditions with your bait at the proper depth it can be as good as it gets .
So here in lies the deal , float was set about 3 foot deep , running it in 8 to 12 foot of water , you set it in the water beside the dock and VERY slowly walk the plank and drag it along side the dock as you walk ,watching the float VERY closely , those fish were biting so soft it was unreal .
So here we go , new jig no nibble and he starts hammering them yet again on his lil orange plastic . then comes the dialogue .....
I am impressed to say the least and tell him so and he tells me this ....he has a really large vocabulary for a 5 year old btw .....
"Of course I am hammering them Pappy , I been doing this all my life !"
he still don't want to hold them though , his dad is concerned about it and I try to get him to hold them , but he just wants to ketch them , he don't even really want to take pictures of him with either ....
it was a long weekend for sure , but man did we have fun ....
we left then biting and went to the lets do fireworks and food next ....
KABOOM was on the land, sea, and air by golly
p.s. how many times can a 5 year old ask when are we going to set off the fireworks Pappy, is quite possibly an infinite number , just saying

Little man is on his way to a lifetime of good times fishing his whole life. He certainly has a lot to look forward to in fishing. Confidence is key and he already has a bunch of it.
