You just need to take to summer pruning the weight off working against you. I will be summer pruning everywhere this summer to rein in spreading out of control fruit tree growth. If you use the Jobe Fruit Tree Spikes you better keep your pruners sharp.

It could use some fertilizer for sure. FiL doesn't prune anything. Has trees with limbs close enough to the ground it is hard to get a push mower under them. I on the other hand will prune one up so the zero turn can get around them. I am a little more conservative when it come to the catalpa worms trees. Catfish bait trumps other trees. As the Red buds die out they will get replaced with fruit trees and a few more worm trees

I'm sure you know this but minor pruning back limb tip growth is summer pruning and major limb removal (no more than 1/3) is done in winter. Limb thinning follows the winter schedule.

Default Topworked the Other 2 Pecan Stump Sprouts

I did these grafts the other day as the two sprouts were taking too much energy away from the other earlier graft last year to Gafford. In the first picture the scion only had secondary buds but the scion was full of carbohydrates so the quality of the scion is more important than the size of the buds. The second picture the primary buds were very healthy too and broke a week earlier than the secondary buds.

Default Topworking Valencia Orange to Artic Frost

I grew two Valencia Orange trees because of the harvest dates was well out from all the other citrus I grow. Valencia is one of the most popular oranges for juicing commercially. Well I now know why, this is one tough orange to peel and is not as sweet. I bought a Artic Frost satsuma that was thrown when the tornado hit us so it has not done well since. Before I totally loose it I removed one of the healthier limbs and topworked one of the Valencia trees with Artic Frost. I did 3 grafts, 2 took. This is my very first citrus grafting so I'm happy with the results. Your knives must be very, very, sharp for citrus preparation. I kinda chewed up the tree trunks lifting the bark with a less than razor sharp knife. The bark didn't slip at all (middle of winter graft).

Those look good. And a graft on each branch took. Better than two on the one. Nice, hope they flourish there.

It's looking good so far, I'm excited as usual to see my handy work grow. Mechanic work, welding work, general repairs - fabrications you don't need nature to work with you, grafting you very much do.

Default Last Year's Pear Graft Growing Well

Almost forgot to post this tree. Another single scion graft. If the trunks are small enough I just use the flat spot for a single scion. The rootstock is a volunteer from a old Stark Bros Pear that was sold as self fertile but never set fruit. By the time it was supposed to fruit Stark Bros quit selling it. They are not the nursery they once were.

Default Frozen Fig Trees are Growing Back

I took a few pictures of all the fig trees I grew from cuttings and planted a while back. All froze to the ground in the 9 degree snow storm. Seems the snow insulated them enough they didn't die. Almost all are already setting figs as I have some vigor in the growth spurts.

Everything looks good. Glad the figs came back. What pear variety is that?
