Default How close attention does one pay when purchasing a rod?

That's a good question. I usually check to see if the guides are in line with the spine, and the bend of the rod, how it feels in hand and usually that's it. Especially when it's from a company I've bought rods from before. Maybe, I should be checking closer. I pulled one of my jigging rods out to do some wrapping on. Thought about maybe a nice but wrap. I got a bit of a suprise. All of what I mis thought was epoxy covered threads was actually epoxy covered tape. From the accents to the guides. All of it. So I think as my next Rod Wrapping project, I'll be replacing the tape with thread. Everything you see in the pictures is tape. Now it has functioned fine. However, I won't be questioning is that going to hold?? Going forward...Name: 20250422_221622.jpg

Other than closeout jig poles (except 2 Dana rods the Tree Thumpers) last purchase I made was 1/2 a container of rods over 10 years ago. Still sitting on 600-650 or so. If I like the feel & action and it doesn't have urethane on the wraps I would buy them. The Wally Marshall jig poles I like so much when Grizzly Jig was overstocked I picked up a lifetime supply.

To tell you the truth Eric I never paid that close attention. I’m curious now.

Same. Almost all of my rods I purchased online and just use them. They all catch fish.

Personally I'll check the bend of the rod, and how it feels to hand. I hardly checked the wraps unless I see something not registering right with the two peas in my brain. But then I'm looking at rods on the budget end too...the most expensive rod I own is the TCB, From BnM, and I won that one.

Hopefully this doesn’t disappoint or surprise ya , but I have a huge number of rods around and best I can tell ya , it’s got to be a really old one to have thread wrapped eyelets, most if not all appear to be some kinda heat shrink type material or something similar with epoxy over it

Possibly tape is lighter than thread. May be because they were trying to shave the weight down. But most certainly tape is way faster to put on than threads.
