    Default Cormo......RANT !

Have I ever mentioned what a scourge they are
    and federally protected too !
    hit Wikipedia up sometime ....
according to them, they are a species of the LEAST concern and growing in population !
It befuddles me and angers me at the same time , they really tear fish up ....
and it has been getting worse every year for a long time now ....
nothing more than a pack of coyotes on sheep ....
some would argue they are just doing what they do ....
some would go so far as to say mankind shouldn't interfere
one thing for certain , they swim as well as an otter .....
eat more than an otter and can hold their breath about forever .....
no fish are safe from them and to be sure, WAY high on the list are crappie as a food source .....
it makes me very unhappy to see crappie with big gashes on them .
in a lot of cases some of the fish have been bit by them more than once from different angles as well .....
sorry for the cormo .....RANT ....

Our city park has a pond that get's trout stockings in the winter. Cormorants aka water turkeys line up in the hundreds waiting for the truck to arrive. I'm guessing they get 85% of the fish that are released. I'm just befuddled as to why they are protected.

Grainraiser the same here as this winter trout stocking was loaded with better than average trouts for the ponds and those cormorants just preyed on the smaller fish that were in the bunch that were released. Many of the fisherman agreed that they are a very harmful bird as Ketchn has stated but what can we do?

Numbers keep going up. Our Crappie are getting beat up by them . No telling how many get eaten. They can swallow a big fish and dive very deep to catch them . When running gill nets seen them hung up in nets over 30' deep!

Time to start emailing and calling our federal congress people and see about getting it changed.

One good thing about them is they have poor digestive systems. They roost and regurgitate their meals. Find their roosting spot and you will find the catfish thick. We call it splat fishing. Lob a bait under their roost in and it is attacked in less than 30 seconds.

I have told this before here but: one day I was moving from one spot to another under super power of my old Honda 10hp, saw something strange floating, and went over to check it out, it was a dead comaraunt with a dead 15" crappie stuck in its neck.

Couldn't agree more. They decimate the crappie spawn around here. Your government at work. Maybe Elon fishes and will put them on his target list. Scott
