    Default Winter doldrums

Seems like about this time every year, I drag out a lot of my lures and find myself watching more fishing videos.

Temperature projected to be -1 f tonight. Still have quite a bit of snow on. Seldom get ice thick enough to really safely do much ice fishing. In my youth, a friend and I ventured out multiple times when ice had water on top and made cracking sounds. Took a John boat with us sometimes just in case. Not that brave or stupid (whichever best applies) any longer.

Do any of you spend winter going through your fishing stuff?

This year has had more consecutive below freezing nights than I remember in awhile.
Around here we can have a high of 25 one day and it be 60 a couple days later.

Colder days are spent swapping reels around , changing line, and tying jigs .
Watching videos does help pass the time.

I’ve been testing myself lately to see how long I can handle the cold .
The wind is a big factor. Keeping fingers warm has been a challenge.
Dressing in layers keeps the body warm .
Always pick the warmest part of the day. Cloudy windy days are the worse.
Having a pond two miles from me makes even a thirty minute trip worth it.

Strange that we all get cabin fever. I am ready for old man winter to make his exit.

California has some problems without a doubt, but year round outside activities has thus far overcome. Name: 20250119_134000.jpg

Love to have seen the Bald eagles above picture, Noodle rod! Yes December to March is a trying time here in the desert and just pure reliant on Fish and Games for supplementing with trout but this town here has gone through lots of transformation to the point of finding fishable water require long drive. So what else to do for an outdoor enthusiast, wildlife watching and little photography. Oh yeah and buying tackles and watching fishing videos online...lol. Nice post!

I’m doing the same although I am becoming more versed with cartoons and Netflix jr shows with my great grandson. Precious….

I’m one of the more fortunate for temperature but it’s ugly out right now. 38* and steady rain and not much change over the next couple of days. I just wanna stay home with my coffee cup this morning. I fished Saturday so that will have to hold me over.

It's currently 16* with a feel like (wind chill maybe) of 4*, warming to today to a high of 37* around 3pm for that hour then nose dive into the teens again...ice on the water isn't going away, so If I do not have to go out, I'm in the house...

We got two inches of snow yesterday evening. It’s 14 with a feels like temperature of 9 . It’ll supposed to warm up to 34 by one this afternoon. Cloudy and 40 tomorrow.

Lakes here have been ice covered for almost three weeks. I stay busy tying jigs every day even though I have thousands. Yesterday I drove to a lake to check how thick the ice was and there is about 6" of clear ice so it's going to be a little while before things open up but supposed to be in the 40's by the weekend so there is hope.
