Default Kayak Trip Report, Flint River

I fished the Flint River from the Turkey Spring Launch off Clouds Cove Rd to the Tennesse River. There was a little more current than I prefer with water 42 degrees and visibility of about two feet. The water had warmed to 44 degrees by 4PM. I kept a limit returning several dozen larger Crappie. No slabs, but most were 12 to 13 inches. No fish on the laydowns, all fish were found 12 to 15 feet deep hugging the bottom in the middle of the river channel. Catching was slow, but steady with no fish willing to come above 10 feet down. I fished the Zman WormZ in Chartreuse with a 1/20oz jig head due to the current. Also returned numerous small Bass, endless Gills and short Crappie. I also found several areas covered up in 8-to-10-inch Stripe.

Hope everyone finds time to chase a Thump tomorrow. Looks like starting Sunday fishing will be restricted to Eskimos!

I almost went there today but went to Cotaco. Caught a couple on laydowns. How did you know to fish the channel?

Nothing on the laydowns, not even Gill. I was cutting across the river to the other side and saw what looked like early spring grass along the bottom. I stopped and fished and caught several Gills and one Crappie. I started fishing down the main channel looking for similar. Most of the Crappie came off old, submerged brush on the bottom, but the Crappie weren't relating to the brush instead hugging the bottom adjacent to it. With the current, most came off the downstream side. Looks like they were using the cover as a current break.

Interesting side note to cleaning fish today. All fish were stuffed with small 1 to 1 1/2 inch shad. Not sure if they were laying on the bottom because they were stuffed, but they definitely fed heavy either Thursday or Thursday night.

I’ve got to get me a fish finder. I’m not near good enough to be trying to fish blind.

They help, but often they don't lead me to the fish. Friday on the Flint was the exception. My favorite feature is the ability to find submerged brush, mark a way point and return over the years.

I had to read that twice "returned several dozen larger crappie" SMH.

    Thanks for the report DB.
