    Default Gizzard Shad

Here's a few attempts at a gizzard shad lookalike.

All are 1/8 oz., one round and 2 minnow heads with eyes, and #2 red sickle hooks.

Pretty rough to start but the third one is not too bad.
I added black fiber to the top of the jig, in fishing position, but it is not showing real well. Also added yellow to get the yellowish tint in the live model.

This one came out decent but not too sure about the color of palmer chenille:

Good take on a major food source.

Nice ties, I think you nailed it on the bottom jig. Nice profile and length is perfect. Will do some damage with those.

rezz93, what's the body material, EPfibers??? The last one looks real good, but I would let the fishes decide on the others...

    Thanks everyone!

These are tied with EP fiber in gray and black. The yellow is a cheap fiber from Amazon. Palmer chenille is used at the head.

From my experience the shad spawn has grown to about 3 in this time of year. So that's about the size I'm trying to get with the jigs.

I'm trying to figure out how to tie a fork tail. So far not much luck. It would probably work by cutting a v in the fiber. May try that later.

    I believe they will work.

Thank you rezz93 for the info. I haven't worked with much EP Fibers. I did try it once and wound up doing a lot of trimming with scissors, but that was from the style of tie.

I recently saw a video where they used UV resin to create a forked tail on a minnow imitation. For the life of me I cannot remember the YouTube channel or tier. I'll post it if I can find it.

Now that you mention it, I think I saw it too, only it was a fly tying video. Would still work on a jig.

Thanks TT, that's a possible way.

It would be better without glue so the material would remain flexible.
Not sure a stiff tail would be as good but it definitely helps to have some movement.
Of course, the glued version would still make a good profile.
