Default 1 Fish 2 Fish, Blue(gill) fish green Fish

Got down into the mid twenties last night , below freezing two nights in a row .
I figured the fishing was going to be tough .
The sun was supposed to come out around this morning and it warm up to fifty .
When I left home it was cloudy , 46 degrees , with an 8mph wind gusting to 17 , with a hope the sun would come out soon .
I started off with a 6’3” Abu Garcia Mass Beat III paired with a Shimano Soare bb2000sspg , with a Ultegra spool and Daiwa J braid .
Standing on the side of the pond with the wind almost to my back , blowing from around 4:30 I was able to cast my 4.6mm tungsten jig and mini trout magnet about sixty feet .
It took about 25 minutes to get my first bite , a decent ultralight bass that put a nice bend in the MB3 rod .
Later I attached a snap on round bobber and caught a bluegill out near the fountain in the pond .
After an hour I switched rods to a 6’6” TFO T&P UL , Daiwa Legalis lt 1000 combo and hooked one other fish but never got it in ,

This was my first time out in these conditions. The sun did make an appearance and it was comfortable just before it was time to head home for a late lunch .
One blue , and one green , beats a skunk !

Thanks Dave , with below freezing temps every night for the next 10 days, I think it’s time to start thinking winter tactics.
Since we don’t normally have any frozen water , water temps in the thirties will slow the bite .
Most of the time this means tiny baits and float fishing. Or the drop shot .
The float fishing is more ideal when it’s windy and lately it’s always windy .
I prefer days with highs above 50 and sunny and plan my trips according to the time of day for the high .

Nice catch. Yeah it’s cold now. Took my boat over to get stick steer put in. Not sure when I’ll get out again but like you I’ll pick the nice days when they come.

    Regards

I would like to add .
Most of my winter fishing is at the Town pond where float fishing is productive.
If I get the opportunity to fish one of the larger reservoirs, I will be twitching.
I haven’t had much luck float fishing at bigger waters.
I want to get back to the creek and see how the winter fishing is affected by the cold night temps.

Great catch! Yes I'm always appreciative of not getting skunked, thanks to winter trout stock, every since early November.

You can't catch them from your recliner. Putting time in on the water and finding the right presentation pays off. Tiny baits and slow presentation is the way to go this time of year and some bigger fish can be caught. Yesterday I caught my biggest crappie of the year while it was snowing and air temperature was 24 degrees. Pain in the rear with guides freezing as well as hands and feet numb but left with a smile on my face.

    Congrats on the big crappie.
I can handle temps in the 40’s , prefer 50’s of course as long as there’s sun .
Just have to bundle up. .
Working on some micro jigs to float at the pond.
I doubt if the pond is over 6’ and cools and warms quickly compared to larger reservoirs.
It has frozen over a couple times over the years .
I like to float a jig over the shallow flats that have had sun on them all morning.

Jjj, your experience brings back memory of an old fly fishing YT video of a young guide trekking along Utah famous Green River with his dog following not far behind, beautiful scenery, but the part where he picks off frozen ice off his rod guides had me thinking about "Its not the fish" saying, or is it?... lol

Nice catch, better than I got that day. The first winter I had my bass boat I couldn’t stand the cabin fever any more and launched the boat with ice on the lake. Had to break through some to get to where we thought we might find some, but never found a one. Icing guides and mustaches are aggravating. We didn’t break anything and the trip still makes me smile so it was worth it.
