Son, you have picked a "sleeper" lake that can be on at times & deader'n a doornail at times. It's the lake I started my fishing adventures on, back in the late 50's, but is nothing like it was back then ... due in large part to the decay & loss of a lot of the standing timber of yesteryear. I can't say about the Winter months fishing, as I've not Crappie fished it in decades, and even when I did it was Spring-Fall for me.
I can say that, yes ... the Crappie will bite during the Winter months, but what I can't say is how deep you'd have to fish. The lake is just about at normal Winter Pool (~725) so finding a place to launch may be a problem. (Summer Pool is ~745)

Last bit of info on Winter fishing I got from a friend of mine was that he caught them casting a pop-eye jig into open boat slips. And I believe I remember him saying that he was fishing the slips at Herrington Marina. Now, that was many years ago, but would still be relevant info, nowadays.

I've heard Moxx Branch was good crappie fishing.

I've fished it several times in the Spring, and if the Crappie are cruising around looking for nesting sites or already making or sitting on them ... you'll rip some lips all along the banks of Mocks Branch. It might even be better now that there are a lot of private docks on back in the creek. I'm not sure there were that many back in my day fishing there, as I never had to go past the riprap along the launch ramp road that runs between Gwinn Island Marina & Mocks Branch. I'd actually start at the mouth of Mocks Br. on the right side bank and cast that bank all the way along that stretch of riprap along the launch ramp road. You find a floating mat of debris, or even a little stickup or submerged bush ... and you might get a sore wrist from setting the hook !!
