Default Something took a bite outa this crappie.

Chunk taken out of crappie. #crappiefishing - YouTube

It was a nice crappie but I felt it got this far in life with his back about taken outa him, that I let him go. Go make some more tough fighters, right.

That’s his spine that’s missing. I shoulda kept him, he coulda been studied for how his nerves re-stored themselves. Wild huh, woulda thought he woulda been the first fish eaten by a big bass back when it first happened.

Kinda looked like a big ol' snapper attacked it at some point in it's life...

Default Similar Thing with a Bass

Seeing this picture reminded me of a time a couple of years ago when I went fish a friend's pond who wanted to cull a bunch of the smaller bass out of the pond. I had a couple on a stringer, and I went to add a third bass, something had bitten one of the bass in half. Turns out he also had too many turtles, and one of the big snappers had an easy meal.

Yeah, you're probably right, but it's awfully close. Oh well.

Those Herons and Cormorants peck holes in their backs here. Sometimes heal up and leave a big dip in the backs . I think some may be hook injuries folks using them for bait when smaller .

likely used as bait as a smaller fish is my vote , wound size and location indicate such to me ....
but like stated herons poke holes thru them too .....seen a really huge male fish one time ...
still lightly kicking near some spawning beds on the surface ....
had what looked like a point blank 410 hole right thru the middle of him when I picked him up ...
herons all over the bank spearing fish at the time as well ....
but one thig for certain , wildlife often heal up from what might have been a humans demise ....
