This is a great post and exactly what I was hoping for when I joined the forum. Thank you for the simple instructions that a "newbie" can follow. Can't wait to get out and vertical cast.

Good read, though I have read it before it's good to read again. Thanks Pappy.
Good read and one deadly way to catch fish especially back in the day when a person could get up close and personal with the fish my fish get spooky as all get out these days i still use this technique with a 10ft jigpole and at a distance of 20ft or so....still deadly.

and then me wonders if the introduction of high end sonar has anything to do with this prevalent behavior in lots of fish species these days ?
one of my tournament bass fishing guys insists this is why bass became very spooky as well in the last few years
if you are quiet and sneaky and on a stationary "perch" "vertical casting" still works VERY well btw ....

I’ve gone out a few times since reading this article and tried vertical casting. Yesterday I went out armed with white grubs and slab sauce. Water temp was around 66 deg. A bit windy, but I found a cove that was somewhat protected. I used the vertical casting technique and caught my first ever crappie. It was so cool. Because of the wind, I had drifted off of the spot, so not sure I ever got back to it. I only caught the one. Also caught a blue gill and a small bass. Thanks for all of the great info!

Congrats on catching your first Crappie. Dropping a marker of some sort, either self made or store bought helps a lot on staying on a spot with the wind blowing. Stay after them and they will come more frequently. Congratulations....
