Thread: Jeep Pick Up Truck update...

Well you can drive it now right? Some rattles I just ignore. My Benz has a rattle only when I have some weight in the trunk. Running with the valve cover off I expected oil to be flying, didn't see any. The wiring was a surprise, didn't expect damage to the wiring way up under the dash like that. That's the kinda time you spend that you can't take a lot of before & after pictures showing the progress.

Yep, it drives. There was good oil flowing into the rockers, you can see the pool of oil there. It would only flying if I reved it up. Yeah, the rewiring was not fun. Not sure how that all had happened, but sure hope it does not happen again. The fuel guage still don't work right. I'll have to have a another look at that. I did find wrong sized fuses all over the fuse box. So something went wrong, but everything seems to work now except the fuel guage.

As I posted before we don't need to work puzzles to keep our minds sharp, we solve puzzles daily.

I bounce projects between hurricanes, but here's a brief update from this morn on the red Jeep.

It's obvious the engine in this jeep has been serviced, replaced, rebuilt. It's been painted yellow, the whole thing, and that had to be done with the engine pulled. Anyway, who ever put it back together was a pretty bad mechanic. Loose bolts, barely attached radiator hoses....I'm sure I'll find more...if you have a good mechanic you go to, you already know they are worth their weight in gold...

I've pulled the wrenches on all my vehicles since my first in 1975. Other than the recent computer replacement in my C230 due to the need for the Mercedes STAR software I've done my own work. All my tools get a bath before returning to the tool boxes too. When you open a tool box drawer of mine it's clean inside, no crumbs in the corners. Is the header style exhaust manifold factory? It looks aftermarket. header bolts are some of the hardest bolts to keep tight. I always used internal hardened Star Washers unless the headers were cheapo's, those always had too large a bolt hole due to poorly made flanges. had to use External Star Washers and blue Loc-tite to keep those tight. Hope you get everything back tightened up.

Nope, that is a factory exhaust header. And yep, I've turned wrenches my whole life. Heck, when I was a teen, I could not afford to pay someone! One of the best things that ever happened to me is I worked during summer school breaks, for three summers, at a volvo shop where my uncle was the service manager and I had four cousins working there as well. Learned a ton.

I am done for the day. Worked all morning to get the red jeep done and out of the garage. Replaced the header gasket, motor mount and cleaned it all up in the intake. Also tested and cleaned the injectors. Yay. Had to get it done cause wifey is getting an important package tomorrow and it needed to go in the space where the red jeep was. She’s getting a new tread mill and needed inside space to have it delivered to and store it till we could get the old one out and the new one set up in its place.



Drives good now, no more noise coming out the manifold. Just has a lot of squeaks and rattles I’ll have to address over time. But not a bad “pick me up” truck.

I drove my Benz with so many problems while working the issues out I used up all the AAA Towing uses for the year. Fortunately the third tow was to get the new computer. We have to have a sense of humor to by beaters, drag them home, then expect them to actually work right? I think it took me over a year of driving the Fishin' Expedition till the "Check Engine" light stayed off. Glad yours's is driving now.
