    Default Short and hot

Didn’t drop in til almost 9 and Nino was already sending me fish pictures. Temps were already getting up and we knew from the start we wouldn’t last long. Starting with a crappie spot we both got a couple but no giants. BGG got a nice one that would’ve been part of a good dinner.

That got slow pretty quick and we went to check on a few gills but came up mostly dry. A couple of nice of nice ones came between the two spots.

Then I lifted the Lunakia and it didn’t move, then it did. My first thought was a big catfish it that wasn’t right either. This didn’t have the headshakes. Then he started traveling and all I could do was follow. I told Jessie I was gonna need help. Net in hand she followed me to the other side of the boat and then back as he continued toward the back of the boat and the outboard. Palming the reel was the only way I could keep from steadily losing line at a rapid pace. He finally tired enough that I could get him up in the water some and after a couple of missed tries she was able to get him in the net. I think we’ve all caught one of these but this was my biggest river cooter so far.

I wanted to see where Nino had wound up so off we went in search of. Not far from where we found him was five boats set up on a bedding area from years back. They weren't real busy but we squeaked out a half dozen or so and finally couldn’t stand the heat any more and we headed for the ramp.

A good trip but man, it was hot. I’m looking forward to a trip or two to the coast later this week when I get a few days off. Hope y’all get out soon and get a few. Be safe and stay hydrated. First thing we headed for after the ramp was a big cold drink. Til next time……Skeet

We’re in the middle of what I’ve always called “ dog days “ .
Not fit for a dog .
Fall is around the corner, soon I hope !
I hate catching, or should I say hooking any type of turtle. They don’t understand I’m trying to get them loose as quickly as possible and always have an attitude.
About half the time they end up wearing my lure as jewelry.

I got lucky Chaser. He was hooked around the front lip of the shell and the point just held on from the tension I kept up during the fight. I just touched the jig and it was free. One of the toughest net jobs in a while. Colors were so bright and vivid.

Tim , I have worst times with them at the town pond . It’s full or sliders .
Most of the time they’ll hook themselves on the foot or leg swimming past my line under water as I’m retrieving.
Without a net and with light line , it’s almost impossible to get my jig back.
I’ve hooked some monster snappers while catfishing . That’s one reason I don’t fish for catfish on purpose any more.

Here’s a laugh for you. I’ll turn 68 at the end of November and I’ve never cleaned a catfish. Never targeted them either. They’re an awesome bycatch, especially on ultralight gear. I also have the utmost respect for large snappers and soft shell turtles. Wouldn’t enjoy being connected to one of them on purpose.

Beautiful fish. While 50 years ago I targeted catfish and cleaned tons of them. Nowadays I don’t even want one in my net, or boat. So I just pop the line and let them have my jig. Did that twice this past Tuesday.

    Regards

Any day fishing is a good day. When it's hot I start earlier and finish usually between 10-11 am. Yesterday I went bass fishing and started using a frog bait. Had three turtles follow my frog on one cast. They are annoying.
