Default Bass keep eating my gills

The past few gill trips I've made have gotten interrupted with bass grabbing my hooked gills. Five times in those trips bass have grabbed my gill and got my heart rate up but didn't land any. Usually they spit it but last one broke off after a short fight. A couple times had several bass chasing the same hooked gill. They missed the gill a lot. Lot's of times bass would be right under the gill and gill would turn so the bass didn't have a good angle and missed the gill. Lot's a fun just watching these bass and how they react to these struggling gills. First two pics are gills that got attacked. They were hurting but swam away.

Good job. I bet that is fun having the bass try taking them. I've never had that happen.

I have had bass swarm them all the way to the boat, but never take them. That would be a hoot lol.

Good story. I have had bass attack some of my dinks, and it is fun to watch.

One bass that I didn't see came out of the water to eat a gill just as I released it splashing water on my shoes as it left. Last year I caught five bass on hooked gills, including a 10.23 # bass, my PB. Just have to give them time to swallow it. Hard to do because they always grab the gill and head straight for a brush pile plus I'm using ultralight gear and tiny jigs with #10- #12 hooks. Not much success but it's fun trying to catch them.

I had a bass get after a Crappie once and banged into that boat at the last second. I got the crappie in the boat and subsequently onto a supper plate.

I’ve had crappie and gills eaten by bass but never landed one. Had five eaten from the same boathouse in a short time. My partner had been fishing that like most of his life and never seen it once. Planets aligned maybe.

I have gills and bass in my pond and I've always wondered if sunnies were a bass forage. When I feed sunnies bits of bread daily (along with 4 turtles), a few bass are on the bottom looking to see what's in it for them. They have never attacked fish the school of about 20. One thing for certain: there's no frogs in the pond!

Sounds like where you are fishing there needs to be some bass fishing (and filleting) to happen!

It does get exciting when a bass or other big fish tries to take your catch.
I typically keep a bass rod ready in the boat when they get that aggressive.
I’ve had bass, grinnel , catfish, gar latch on landing a few.
Even had a few alligators try, I’ve been lucky to snatch my fish away before they could chomp down.
