I've always been a tinkerer. As I child I'd take my toys apart. My folks always said "I was looking for the magnet". I just like to see how they worked. Then when I got my first car, and I was working on something, having a difficult time. My dad would say, just put it back together and we'll take it to the shop. Well, to me that was a challenge. I worked on it and worked on it, till I got'r done. Never gave up. Just like today, never give up. It's gonna work one way or another. I guarantee.

Slab, all of my young adult years I HAD to work on my cars and trucks trying to repair what I could because I didnt think I could afford to pay everybody for everything. Lucky for me I knew a few mechanics I could go talk with to get a little advice so I was able to learn alot about what I was doing. Same held true with washers, dryers, etc. Now that I'm an old man I rather hire it out when I can simply because I find excuses for me to NOT have to work on something. In reality it's mainly that I'm lazy! Ha!

All that said, even in all my years I wouldnt try overhauling an engine or tranny or anything nearly that big. Sure, I'd fix brakes, replace water pumps, etc., but I also knew my limits because I didnt have all the tools nor did I have a place to do that kind of work. And did I mention that I never did really care for that kind of work either. Sorta like when I built my house after nailing on all those shingles I said if I could ever afford to pay anybody anything it would be to put on a new roof. And since then I havent nailed another shingle on to this day.

Keep us posted on how the engine build goes. Not that I wanna do it....but I'm still interested in how youre doing with it. I do admire the ones that can and do!

I’m sure I could eventually figure something out but like mentioned above I don’t have the space or time for most things. What would take me a day or more to do, a professional could have done in an hour. I pay for their experience same as I get paid for my experience. I know when something is out of my wheelhouse.

I did work as a Volvo Mechanic for a very short time (two summers). My Uncle was the service manager, he taught me a lot in that time span. Then I got into Mainframe Computers, was a Systems gut on mainframe MVS operating systems for most my life, then Unix, and so on. I chose to work on my cars to keep balance in my life. Soft computer hands during the day, rough them up at night working on my cars, and my friends/family cars. lol I dono, I always enjoyed it. I can tell you though, I save myself and all my friends/family a ton of money. Now I just look at it as a challenge. I've rebuilt transmissions, and top ends, but never rebuilt an entire engine. And I know I'm not really doing a rebuild, but taking it apart, and installing new bearings is close enough for me, for now. Full rebuild may still come, and maybe the jeep with 250k miles on it needs a stroker some time in the near future! hmm
