Thread: Testing a New Ultraight Combo

Nice! I love my TCB rod, and I use a Daiwa Legalis for a lightweight and great fishing combo.

The TCB is certainly worth the money. Last week was discussing this rod with the owner of Trout Magnet. No secret I am on pro-staff of TM and am friends with Jeff Smith. And now that I live here in Searcy, the home of Trout Magnet, our discussions are much more frequent about fishing, gear, and lures. I am lobbying to have the rod redesigned with the butt and reel seat distance greatly reduced. I have had a ton of people who own this rod tell me the reel seat is too far from the butt. And I agree with that. I field tested the Trout Slayer rod that was made by Trout Magnet. It was virtually same rod that is now the TCB that is made by BnM. I also fished the TCB rod and gave away a couple of them on my channel. I highly recommend both rods as a great value, but feel the distance between butt and reel seat needs to be changed.

I hope they do redo the TCB and make it so the rod tip from the present TCB will work on it .
That way I’ll have a couple of replacement tips for the new TCB I would buy .

i am not a rod builder, but does it hurt to cut the bottom of the rods, removing around 2 inches of material and regluing the same type of butt back on.
i had 2 rods built aling time ago, one being 9 foot and the other being 7 foot 6, from the butt to where my reel mounts is about 7 inches.
however my jdm rods and a gloomis ned rig rod, all the butts are like 9 inches, i would love to remove a couple inches, but dont know if that will throw anything else off.
and i dont know any rod builders anymore.

My understanding is that the action of the rod is a bit faster if you trim from the tip and a bit slower if you trim from the butt. The only concern I might have is balance. If that either doesn’t matter or the balance isn’t changed that much ten I think it’s a good idea to make it what you want it to be. Mudhole had many choices of replacement knobs to choose from.

I have a TSS, the predecessor to the TCB and it’s a rod that I’m not ready to lose from my stable. As stated, very light and great action. Casting is great with the microwave guides it came with. A 1/16 rooster tail casts like a rocket and will be in the woods if you don’t pay attention. Being two piece makes no difference with this rod. Mine is paired with a Daiwa Regal 1000s and the match couldn’t be better. Mine is rated for light action and so is my 5’6” Lightning Rod that I just added two guides to. Both of which are so versatile and perform really good. Being two piece makes them a good one for a road trip.

I know what you mean about casting it into the woods! Lol. I’ve done that a couple times already. The TCB will launch a bait. I really LOVE my Regal LT 1000. Such a smooth reel for the money. Speaking of casting like a rocket, I tried out a new Daiwa Presso rod today. 5’6 UL paired with a Daiwa Revros LT 1000. 2lb Sufix Ice Magic line (only because it’s high vis). I tied on a Trout Magnet with a 1/64 TM jig. I could easily cast it well over 40ft. I was blown away! I think this will be my new setup for casting Trout Magnets for a while. I fish them a lot in the late Fall and Winter while chasing crappie up shallow. When I made the first cast, I let out a chuckle over how far it went. Talk about fun!

I just googled the Leland rod and its such a cool looking rod for the price, handle and all. However being a ultralight rod I agree with others the butt section needn't be this far from the reel. I mainly see longer butt section in surf rod, a JDM boat jigging rod, and my Browning 9' Six River steelhead rod I used as surf ultralight setup.
