I do both and let the fish tell me what they prefer. Something about that slow pendulum fall gets them to bite. Also holding it right in their face makes them bite as well.

I like to flip at them, but sometimes the fish prefer the right in their face when the water temp is hot and they don’t want to chase anything.
letting it fall into a spot they are sitting on can be very deadly , but it can also be they want it put right on their nose , I personally like to let mine fall into them from an angle most of the time , so my vote goes for the flip , it will eventually get vertical anyway so this is the main reason for the flip ....2 birds one stone scenario ....
i am a fan of dont let them look it over for very long , LS has shown me more often than not , if they get to stare it down for very long , they will quite possibly figure out it aint a real food item and swim off ,
of course it depends on competition and what time of year and water clarity and so on and so forth , but to be very sure a fish no matter the species of fish that gets to look over an artificial bait from close up will often times turn away from it and swim off ....

I tend to flip and try to keep the boat back away from my target

Vertical jigging is my preference but during the summer I seem to have more success flipping. I think it has to do with keeping the boat away from them and not disturbing them.
Yes, as a matter of fact, I do have a retirement plan...FISHING!
