Man, we had those come in by the 100s when I lived in SD. I can't remember the limit up there, but it was high. Only problem, so is steel shot, so it wasn't worth it to shoot them. Especially when you could shoot mallards, teals and geese.

Smother those coots in onions and garlic but don't throw the gizzard away. They are awsome. Coots and gizzards make a mighty fine gumbo also. To keep hunting them from being expensive you have to find them in rafts so that when you shoot you can get a dozen at the time. I remember a story my Dad told a long time ago. He'd shrimp in the spring and summer and trap in the fall and winter. One day he came upon a raft of coots and fired 3 shots. When he was finished picking them up his pirogue was full and he had to sit on them to paddle back to the landing. That night the whole community of trappers had plenty coots for some great gumbo. Back then they did a lot of living off the land.

i once hit a raft of them in the open water in my boat on full plane in the pitch dark , not sure how many didnt make it , but to be sure they got hammered in the dark that night
