I wanted to fish the creek with a woolybooger and try to catch another shoal bass this morning.
I took my 6’6” Grimlin 2wt to fish the size 12 woolybooger.
After about twenty minutes of working the creek with the booger , my line stop while I was stripping across the creek . I thought I’d hooked something on the bottom. It just stopped . But then it started moving and the battle was one . The fish made a run down stream as I was able to get the loose line on the reel so I could use the reel’s drag to help fight what looked like a bass once I worked it back upstream and closer .
But then it took off upstream and stopped about 25’ almost straight across from me . I didn’t feel the fish anymore. He wrapped me on something underwater.
I tried giving slack , but nothing and I had to break off .
I retied and caught a nice redbreast about five minutes later .
I think on my next creek trip , I’ll take a little heavier rod to toss my woolyboogers . Would make it easier tossing the boogers too.
I packed up and drove to the local reservoir that has green sunfish and fished for an hour there with my new 6’ 2wt TFO Signature 2 rod I found a deal on I couldn’t pass up .
I’d been wanting to get the newer model to compare with my old Signature 6’ 2wt .
There is a difference. I like the 2 better . It has more flex. It’s closer to a true 2wt .m
Ended up catching 22 fish , mostly green sunfish with a couple warmouths and a few gills .

I’m as disappointed about the lost fish as you are. I live for those rare opportunities. Glad you got a bunch of others to help ease the pain.

Good post and story, gill. Those big ones didn’t get that way being stupid, and the 2 would have required that the fish make a mistake or two. Sounds like it was a good time!

Two of my favorite places to fish locally. The creek below the Mill and the water reservoir that has a population of green sunfish.
They’re less than fifteen minutes apart . So I hit the creek first , since it’s the farthest. Fished about thirty minutes or so and then head to the reservoir.
I love the creek because I never know what I might catch . And thirty minutes is about all my shoulder and casting arm can handle throwing a woolybooger.
Always hoping for a shoal bass , but today it didn’t happen .
I caught two redbreast, one small and one that gave a good fight on the 7’ four weight.
At the reservoir I managed two warmouths and nine green sunfish . All small but fun on the 7’ 3wt St Croix Imperial, that fishes like a two weight . You won’t find a lighter 7’ three weight flyrod.
A fun couple of hours to get me ready for my meet up with my fishing buddy tomorrow, weather permitting.
