    Default Half a seed?

Pumpkinseed that is! Yesterday after work I stopped by a little pond across town and fished for a about an hour using but a little split shot and couple flies hope to entice a few takes. Upond arriving I could not believe in just a few days between visits the vegetation had practically overtaken the entire surface but a few pockets of opportunities. Our local ponds was known to have bluegills, green sunfish and redear sunfish stocked long ago but I’ve never caught the latter. With this many species in such small confinement one wonder will there be hybrids to be caught? And I have, including yesterday’s colorful specimen. Total fish caught was 5 green sunfish, 3 little bluegills and the said cross- specie. All online searches point it toward a cross between pumpkinseed and green sunfish. I didn’t know or read there’s Pumpkinseed was introduced to Southern Nevada but have read they were caught in reservoir near Northern Nevada, Reno area. Any suggestions? Cheers!Name: IMG_7464.jpg

Nice looking pan. That water looks tough to fish.

Very cool catch, thanks for showing me. I’m mostly uneducated in hybrids.

green to gill is my guess , we have lots of them in these parts , highly variable in coloration , the key to a guess it what lives there in the first place , the assumption by many is the red gill flap makes it a red ear cross , this is not the case , my 27 cents on it ....

Fin shape and color is almost exactly like a green sunfish, and those spots on the side is for sure a pumpkinseed! I think you're right

CTP, further search infact showed the pond where this fish was caught does or did hold Pumpkinseed sunfish. Now the challenge at hand is will I ever going to catch the source of origin dubbed by some as The most beautiful of ALL sunfishes!! I can only say the chase is on…lol.

I've caught 1 pumpkinseed so far, but I've seen so many (both big ones on beds and little 2-4 inch ones, of course, when I had my rod the beds were gone). They're native to my area, and surprisingly, bluegills are not. I've heard they get super aggressive during the spawn, even moreso than bluegills, and almost anything can catch them then. Good luck! Considering this one looks very much like mostly or 50/50 pumpkinseed seeing as the spots are so vibrant, I'd say that it's parent was pure, and you have a good shot.
