I've been powder painting my jig heads for almost 30 years. I still have the original vibrating fluid beds the paint manufacturer sold back in the early 90's. My point, your teaching an old dog a new trick, your post has opened up a door of new possibilities for me using controlled heat application with your torch and dipping right into the container. You did a nice teaching job on your video. I also learned one more "Trick" to put in my tool box of making lures. Thank you for sharing this. This thread might be more effective in the jig making forums. Welcome from Alabama.

I think it is nice that you are posting up these videos. You create some very nice jigs. Please don’t take this wrong, but I want to point something out to you.

Filing jig heads: Filing a jig head made from lead is not something that should be done as demonstrated in the video. You are filing away over top of your stuff and the table top surface. This will leave a smattering of very fine particulate that is easily disturbed. Especially when using an emory board.

These particles could become airborne and inhaled. They could be spread about and contaminate the area, door knobs, etc. Even if you wash your hands when done, you will then get lead residue on your hands later, and not realize and possibly even consume some of it with your sandwich. It doesn’t just go away.

Lead is a heavy metal and as such it is very difficult for your body to discharge it. Over time the residue accumulates and the effects are subtle at first. It is only later on, when illness is noticeable, that a doctor will get to finally make this guess, and order a test. The treatments are ineffective at best. Long term health effects.

So, I would suggest that you protect yourself. Either don’t file at all, or if you do file them change your style. Put down some sort of paper, like newspaper or a paper plate and file over top of that. Then carefully encase the residue and dispose of it. This will eliminate you spreading it all around the room and onto other surfaces where you might not realize it exists. Years after spreading lead residue on an object, you can still transfer it onto your hands and then eat something not knowing it is there and you get a dose.

Filing can also generate very small particulates that can be inhaled. Inhalation is the second most common source of contamination, as ingestion is number one. I suggest a well ventilated area such as on the back porch or somewhere the fine particles can be steadily blown away from your inhalation activities.

Lead reside can also be directly absorbed through the skin. Gloves will be very good at preventing this. You of course can simply wash your hands, but then you will be left with lead residue on your sink area.

Most folks have no concern for any of this really. It is a shame as it doesn’t involve just them, but their family members who also encounter the residue. Children are the most vulnerable, but simply because the effects are more easily noticed in children.

You obviously are not required to offer any warnings or such, but a quick mention regarding just keeping the work bench clean of lead would be nice. You might not ever get enough lead into your system to ever get noticed by any physician, but that is not the issue. Any lead going into your system will have an effect. As you age you will notice others getting sick from all manner of things. It happens. I want to see everyone that messes around with lead for fishing stay as healthy as they can for as long as they can.
