I said I'd do it, so here it is: 4/10/22 report, Hiwassee River

Not proud, but I promised a report.

Only 1 of the 2 newB's from the plant showed up, and we gave it a shot mid-morning on Sunday. Was froze up in the morning but an absolutely gorgeous afternoon.

...but the fish still didn't seem to be in the mood

Water temp ranged from 58-60*. We fished pre-staging and spawning areas with little success. We drifted jigs under slip corks and searched from shallow to deep water. Finally started getting a little action the deeper we got. Nothing came from water shallower than 7ft.

Picked up 4 keepers for the freezer and many shorts. 3 of the 4 did have eggs, and egg sacs were still firm. All fish came on 1/16 double drop rigs loaded with BG "something with chartreuse in it"

I believe the next week/10-days will be magic time on the Hiwassee

As I have now joined the 'lifestyles of the poor and unemployed' club, I hope to be able to contribute to this forum a bit more!

Hiawassee is a fickle mistress to say the least. It is usually feast or famine there. Lots of first cast of the morning brings a fish to the boat and then nothing. Then there are the just short fish days for me everthing just under the 10 inch minimum. It is a beautiful area to fish. I fish there often.

...been mostly famine for me for several years now. I know this species is highly cyclical, but I haven't done worth a crap on them for at least 3 years now. I used to be able to scratch out a solid limit in a few afternoon hours, and not a one in the well under 11".

I cannot remember the last time I had a limit

I have only caught a few limits myself. Last year I caught hoards of short fish. If that is any indication they should have good numbers of legal fish now

Thank you for the report. I fish Hiwassee once or twice a year and I know that it can be tough. I have had good days there in the past, but I don’t think that I fished it last year. Been thinking about it now though.

DK, I'd be interested in your success on the Hiwassee when crappies go back deep. I've always sucked catching crappie when they are shallow but used to think I was pretty-fair on them when they're deep. Not so much in the last few years though.
