    Default April

I went fishing Monday and the weather was beautiful. Smaller sized lake and I fished for about four hours with diddly squat for results. The winds were calm and the Sun was shining. I sat there trolling around and around hoping to get a bite. Then I started thinking about my rod arrangement and decided that it was time for a change. When I got home I removed the six rod holders from up front and relocated them to the back of the boat.

I used Starboard, which is a very heavy and dense plastic material. The piece I had is about 5/8” thick. I cut two strips about five inches wide and a foot long and mounted those to the boat. Then mounted the rod holder bases to those. This saves a bunch of holes from being drilled into the boat.

So with the new design all ready to go…. I went fishing Tuesday at a different lake. This time the winds were blowing fairly steady from the South. So I motored to the South end of the lake and trolled with the wind helping to push me along. This reduces that slap sound of waves hitting the hull, and makes steering a lot easier to manage.

Before I lowered the TM to start, I had dangled a couple of jigs over the side. These are my close in to the boat jigs and as I was getting the other rods deployed, WHAM a nice one hit. So that saved me from the superstition that starting the livewell before starting is bad luck. It isn’t.

The new system worked pretty well. The lines only crossed up once, and that is great for a windy day. Instead of lines running down the length of the boat on each side, now all are at the back. It made sense to have rods up front because I have a hand controlled TM, but now I see that was only an illusion. I can still sit up there and face the rear, and can still respond in time to a bite. Only now I can see all the rods at one time, 10 of them, which is probably best for my old neck bones.

I found that I was standing a little more which is nice. I was walking around more which is also nice. My biggest concern was would a fish get fouled during the attempt to land him. Being as I do not stop the boat for a fish, they come in at an angle and end up at the back corners of the boat. I like to keep this area clear of lines. I can still have a line there so long as it is running deep. It was a little tighter with the new arrangement, but I didn’t have any fish fouling on me. They came in at the angle and I lifted them in.

The fish cooperated to an extent as I caught ten in total. All released. These were solid fish to be sure, with most around 12” in length. Nice healthy looking devils. My wife was going out to dinner with her sisters, so I wasn’t excited about cleaning then grilling some fish. I made myself some Mac & Cheese that night instead.

It felt good to catch more than six, which has been my average lately. It also felt good to be catching some nicely sized fish. Not sure why I didn’t take any pictures for you guys. Maybe if someone were interested, they could have asked. I will probably take pictures next time.

All of the colors were getting attention, so long as they were Tickle Me Elmos. Once again these bladed jigs were the hot ones. I really like the new design I created a few weeks back. The Screw Lock feature works great as none of the baits slid down or wadded up on me. That old man told me that little blades work great in that particular lake and Tuesday seemed to bear his words out.

I imagine it is possible to have lakes that have fish that want something different than the fish in other lakes, although I don’t see how that is possible. The water appears to be the same. There may be differences in the forage available. Maybe some lakes have more of this available than that, and vice versa. The bigger the lake it seems the more they like a spinning blade design.

I like to tell folks that they should have been here yesterday as that always seems to upset them.

Here is a picture I took of some of the locals watching me troll past with the new rod setup.

Folks around here like photos. 10 rods out the back of the boat is a lot. Running 2 planer boards out each side with 2 rods out the back kept me pretty busy last weekend. Them locals certainly look like the ones on every lake. 10 is a decent take.

Nice discovery! What are the rod lengths you're using, Paul? Can even use fixed-floats to try "way back" presentation for the spookier HOGS!!

I pulled 2 rods out the back of the boat with floats. The fish last weekend prefered those under the planer boards

I will take some pictures of my setup and post up.

This morning I am up early to prepare a meal for a bunch of Bull Gators. These are very wealthy folks that enjoy watching the very best college football team in the entire nation- The Fighting Gators of the University of Florida. These guys pay big bucks to be included in the exclusive group. Today they are having something called a Topping Off Party, or something similar. It is for when they get the roof on a new structure, during construction. Well they have the roof on a new indoor area here in Gainesville. I am frying fish.

The school already has an indoor football practice area so unclear what this is designed to do. That first indoor area was so the other football teams couldn’t come and film the practices. College football is big business and any advantage is taken. It is also a recruiting tool.

Here in Gainesville we have gotten a new coach. The town has a love hate relationship with coaches. Spurrier was coach forever, until one night he up and quit to turn pro. He came back scrounging around for his old job and the Bull Gators were uninterested. Apparently he didn’t drink enough and avoided their functions. Then we got Urban Decay and won a few titles, but at a high cost. He kind of allowed crack smoking and shootings so long as the kid could play ( Aaron Hernandez ). Then another, then another, then another. Now we got someone new and I haven’t a clue who this one is. I do know this though, if he wins the game he is a hero, and if he loses he is a bum and better get out of dodge. Tough town with a small amount of patience- maybe.

I think it will be fun to see what our state money has purchased. I do not get to see many of the games because they are on ESPN which I would have to pay money to see, or on SEC TV which again costs money. So I listen on the radio which is an old school way of enjoying the games. I think I got to watch twice last year.

When I came to this area I was a Miami Hurricane fan. After four days living here I realized that I was gonna have to be a Gators fan or else I was gonna be real miserable. I had no idea that this school has such a great history of football. I don’t really care if they win so much as if they are good kids. I prefer ethics and fair play. Usually I get that. I was very happy when they booted Cam Newton from the program for stealing. I was especially happy that Shame Us Winston played for our rival the Criminoles. We have had some scumbags, don’t get me wrong, but the fans will always love the greatest player we have ever seen- Tim Tebow. He was unbelievable. The media hated him because he dared to pray openly where others could see him and be offended. We live in a world run by evil people, and it ain’t getting fixed anytime soon.

Time to get ready to go to work. I work again tomorrow, probably yet another wedding, and want to try to take the wife out on Sunday. I have figured out a way that she can lay on her tube while I fish. I will lash it to the front of the boat so it stays right alongside the boat as I troll around. In tight will make me feel better about things. When she was out behind the boat all I could imagine was that I was trolling her like a lure for gators. That one would grab her foot and pull her off and under while I watched. Which is why I tended to keep my gaze away. But the new configuration will allow me to keep her close to me and the gators will probably not realize they have an opportunity. I feel it is as safe as being in a kayak and folks get away with that all the time. True shame I realize, but they do. Anyways, I think she will have fun in the Sun. Couple of hours midday and then we are off the water anyways. She burns very easily.

UP2- I have a pair of 16’ rods, a pair of 11’ rods, and a pair of 6’ rods out each side. Then I have a pair of 10’ rods and a pair of 6’ rods in rocket tubes mounted to the seat. This gives me a wide spread and I can drag all of them a ways back or drag a few closer into the boat. Again, I like to leave the area where I land the fish open and free on lines, so I fish a few jigs in close to the boat. I do need to order me up some new rod holders though. The four adjustable holders came with what I call quick draws. The front is shaped like a V instead of a U. These are good for spider rigging but suck for trolling as the rod slips out of them when a nice fish gets on or I strike a hydrilla garden. Looks like the pole is gonna take off and it might. So as always the boat is a work in progress.

The wife and I are very happy that we have new schedules. Being funeral directors meant we worked nights, weekends and holidays ALL THE TIME. I missed so many family events and cool gatherings with friends because- my boss needs me. Very seldom did we both have off any time together. I wished I had never got started in that profession as it stole my youth. So when she wanted to quit, I was for that 100%. Now she has some county government job and will get lots of time off. She also gets a nice healthcare plan, which includes me, and that ain’t all bad. Now I don’t have to have a job that provides coverage.

My new gig has me working nights and Saturdays. I told the boss I needed to quit and find something else to do. That working nights and weekends wasn’t something I wished to do. They have offered me the office manager position. This will have me in the office during the heat of the day, and off nights and weekends and holidays. Like normal folks. They say they will still want me to cook when they need me to, but that’s OK. I told them I wanted to work four days a week. The old office manager leaves the job soon and they expect to transition me sometime next month.

I will take pictures today of the new arena if I see anything cool.
Maybe they will bite this one……

Congrats on the new position. Being inside during the heat of the day surely is a nice perk. As well as limited nights and weekend. I have certainly worked my share of both. Seems things hardly every need to be repaired during the light of day. Been on dayshift going on 3 years now. Certainly is nice to sleep a night as was intended. A couple of episodes of Swamp People and you can learn to Choot'em gators like Troy Landry.
