The others have given great help already, and if I could add a few things? A very light jig head and very limber rod sounds like will help you. I am talking like 4wt fly rod and 1/64oz heads. For days like this also have a little fur or maribue in your hand ties. Try to hold it absolutely motionless and or raise and lower it very slowly, like 10seconds to raise or lower 1ft. You are not looking for a bite per say, you are striving to perceive that jig either gaining or losing 1/64th oz. This feeling will last for less than 1 second, this means that you will have about 1/3 of one second to sink your hook into its upper lip assuming that you noticed the instant the fish opened wide. All this obviously cannot happen if one is thinking about the cars oil change or even talking to your friend, time it so that the only objective is hooking the unfelt fish.

    Use scent. Nibbles or sauce.

I just thought of another important factor that helped me a ton. Become a line watcher not a rod tip watcher. Many times folks miss fish because the never watched the line twitch or slowly move to the side. If you only watch your rod your going to miss alot of bites. Trust me on this one.

I use a strike indicator. Shows the light tiks and especially when they only slightly lift the bait.

Buddy of mine and I Crappie fished a night tournament together. He couldn't buy a bite and I couldn't keep them off the hook. We tried everything to change the outcome. he fished my spot and I fished his. I still caught more fish. I used his pole, he used mine and I still caught more fish. We were both using slip bobbers, so there wasn't any fisherman action on the pole. It didn't matter what we did, I caught more than him. It happens. Another time out, he outfished me no matter what we tried. It happens.

If my son outfishes me 3 to one with identical equipment I'm having a good day! I've never seen anybody that could catch them like him on cork and jig. I can't even see his cork do anything!!

OP , My best guess is your buddy keeps the jig moving horizontally. Most people don’t get this.
Also , when vertical jigging, Don’t “yo yo “ the jig. Make sure you follow the jig down without letting your line go slack. ( think about a injured minnow sinking after a spurt of energy) many times this triggers the strike.
These things will improve your catch.
