I don't have to worry too much about spread here in Illinois. We can only have 2 poles each and this boat is just a 2 person jon.

Side pulling you can use shorter rods and still keep your baits spread. Most side pulling boats are set-up to fish 3 people efficiently. Just my take on the matter.

What in the world am going to do with all these 16 footers I've been buying up for years.

You can still use them if you have a 16 ft net

your 16 ft poles will work fine for pushing jigs and as an outside rod if pulling from each side of the boat like i do. my long lining set up is 2 16s, 2 11s, and 2 7s. 1 one each side. find the right depth with amount of line out and speed. landing fish with is not a big deal but does take a little practice, just bring the fish to the net.
Either that or teach my wife's spaniel to retrieve them.

Never understood why side pulling would be different than regular long linning out the back or sides or how you cover different water than you would when pulling ! I have pushed and pulled at the same time covered close to 40’ each pass .

It's gotta be similar for sure. And when I'm alone I'll be dock shooting large part of the time. But for my purposes side pulling is definitely safer than trolling. When I'm trolling in my boat I find myself hopping on and off the bow deck. This next boat don't have platforms period. Nothing makes me happier than getting a friend or two together and trolling and catching some good fish. Keepers or not.

For me it is a few things that attract me. All your poles are relatively close by and in easy reach. It is a more comfortable seating and pole arrangement. It seems to me that I notice hooked fish sooner due to being able to monitor all the poles in a single straight away view. That's just me. You may feel differently.
