Thread: Hand me down dilemma and reel quesiton

Sell, give away or donate them. If you are lucky to have a Bass Pro Shop near you, Bass Pro usually has a spring(feb/marchish?) event in which they accept rods/reels as trade ins toward the purchase of new equipment.
I have in the past just donated said items to Bass Pro. Good Luck.

Maybe find some kids needing some equipment and give to them. Always brings a smile.

Donate is easiest, but I’m sure you could sell here or on EBay.

I just sold a rod on EBay and have four more listed.

Our local city owned water supply lakes have loaner rods for kids to use. I'm sure they could always use more in the stable.

Another idea of where to donate rods: The local Wildlife Management Area (WMA) has Kid Days on specially stocked ponds and is always happy to accept donations for the kids.

I have a TSS rod which is basically the TCB rod and it works beautifully with a Daiwa Regal LT 1000. A 10 bearing reel that I gave about $60 for and use 3lb fireline crystal with a 4 lb leader. Excellent rod.

About the older rods; it comes with a backstory. I had a reel that when I got it was the smoothest reel I had ever owned. I used it for years and caught countless fish so it owed me nothing. It got a little tired and I got aggravated with its personality one trip and had to stop by a tackle shop on the way home. I took it off the rod and took it inside with me. Working inside, doing small odd jobs, was a kid about 12 to 14 years old that my buddy told me had no dad around and no real way to get money so they kept him busy from time to time. So I asked him a few questions and found out his gear was pretty weak and asked him if he’d like a pretty good reel. His eyes lit up like a 6 year old with ten bucks in a candy store, and I handed it to him. He may abuse it and break it but none of that matters, he had a good reel for a time and someone he didn’t know gave it to him. I bet he thanked me at least 4 times before I got out of the store. We make a big difference in kids life when we treat them special and they remember it for life. I had a guy give me a creme night crawler when I was real young and I remember every detail about that. You’ll know when you meet them who deserves what you have to give. Merry Christmas, hope everyone’s good at your house.
