Default New Pond Adventures + How to take fish pictures

After spending quite a bit of time going saltwater fishing for porgies, and neglecting the freshwater fish, I decided to try a new pond. I've always suffered from a fear of missing out, so I would hate changing my bait in order to keep my line in the water as long as possible. Today, I decided to change that, by vowing to change lures whenever the fish weren't biting. After a long trek through very weedy paths, I made it to my destination, and the fish were hungry. I'll reply with some fish pictures, but I was curious as to how you guys take your fish pictures when catching and releasing. Mine ended up being mostly too grainy and zoomed out. I caught a small yellow perch, small bluegill, large bluegill, and a redbreast that seemed to have some patterns reminiscent of a pumpkinseed. Name: 20210820_194849.jpg

CTP, I guess I’ll start first by saying I’m mostly using my IPhone these day. To answer your question without know what you are using I can only assuming a camera or phone with close-focus capability feature otherwise known as Macro( little flower symbol), which allow subject to be photographed very close to the lens from whole body to headshots. My inexpensive Panasonic lx5 pointNshoot is extremely versatile when out in the field.

I have a phone with a very capable camera. Part of my issue when taking closeups is that the fish tend to be very active flopping around, and I don't have enough hands to both hold the fish still and take the picture, so I usually take pictures farther away, that don't have the quality I'd prefer. What position do you generally take the photo in?

    Consider a tripod.

That said, I use my cell phone and sometimes it can be tricky. Bass and crappie are pretty easy as you can lip them. With Gills and the like, it can be easier to lay them on the dock, ground, etc and QUICKLY take the pic. I'm not one for letting them flap around on the ground. I see people on YT and IG letting beautiful bass flap around on rocks and dirt and I cringe.

I've had bluegill release themselves when I set them down for a picture. I guess that's the easiest way to do it but I always cringe when they flap around.

    CTP,
I use a inexpensive pointNshoot camera on belt case and on a neck lanyard.(learned from experience). Highly recommend a lanyard on a expensive phone. I still use a flip phone and they do not take good quality pics. but was easy to take pic and hold phone and fish. I know nothing about the smart phones. With my camera it is easier to have both hands on the camera. First make sure you can remove lure/hook quickly. Try to pick a spot out close by before hand. Have not had to much trouble with fish moving but it will happen at times. I do not try to take pics at water edge since they seem to want to move. I put fish on ground, etc. and hold gently before removing hands, you can sort of tell if they want to move, and if so pause a second before moving your hands away. Hope this helps some and lets see some pics.

CTP, just like moonrunner says, laying them on ground (gently) is not entirely a bad thing, especially on soft vegetation, and it gives viewers a glimpse of information about where and how it was caught ( when lure left attached.) While handheld shots are tricky I found them to be the easiest for some reason. Here’s couple old photos. Cheers!

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep those in mind, and hopefully I'll get some nicer pics. I had some success taking pictures when I was fishing on a nice flat rock ledge, but it gets harder when I don't have as flat an area. I was with someone else, and they took some pictures of fish, but they were several feet away, and zoomed out so they aren't great. I'll include some pics once they send them to me.

With my little point and shoot camera, I had to lower the resolution of the picture so it all happened faster. Higher resolution takes more time to process and in my case, would be out of focus. Since these pictures are for screen presentation 98% of the time, once I lowered that resolution my pictures began to come out clearer and had less chance of the fish bouncing around.
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.
