Something I am trying to teach the grandsons about vehicles (fuel mileage, insurance costs, tire costs etc) differ with each type vehicle. I want them to shop around and learn before jumping at the first shiny car that catches their eye. I go by a saying an old shop foreman taught me at 1/10 SFG in Germany back in the 80’s. “ A raggedy ride beats a dressed up walk any day!

my first car was a 62 volkswagon beetle from a junk yard that cost 200 bucks , no interior and looking really rough.
ran pretty well though and it made me a happy camper to have something to drive that was mine .
i spent time and elbow grease and some dollars on it and gave it a nice paint job and some nice wheels and tires and a new interior .
after about a year of driving it i traded it to that same junk yard for a 1957 chevy pick up truck with a late model 283 in it .
the doors of the truck were in the bed of it when i got it , i did the same routine with it and when it was done , mmmmm
i had me a really pretty bright orange fast as heck pick up truck i drove until i graduated high school
got lots of tickets in it and about went to jail several times for excessive traffic violations .
i street raced it , i jumped raised railroad tracks with it , even learned how to drive on 2 wheels with it ! it was a beast , could blue smoke the tires when you hit second and just about made my dad crazy with the legal issues it caused me to get into .
my present day attorney some 45 years later had to get me out of several really ugly court appearances .
man did it sound nice when that motor hit high rpm , you would a swore a drag car just rolled up , she would just scream and shake the earth ....
sure went thru LOTS of rear tires fast
made me proud to have my own vehicle that my dad and grandpa helped me fix up ....
