Mythical Sacalait
I have spent decades fishing in the marshes for reds, specs and sheepsheads. I began freshwater fishing over a year ago, I catch bream and bass but I have want to catch sacalait. I have fished Toledo Bend, Lake Salvador, Lake Cataouchie, Lake Beouf, Lac Des Allemandes, Flat Lake, Lake Verret and Bayou Black. I have caught one sacalait and that was in Lake Beouf back in March. What can I possibly be doing wrong? Where is the best place to fish for sacalait in SE Louisiana? Researching this is difficult. Any help is greatly appreciated

Look for their food! They feed mostly on shad. Depth to fish is essential. They feed up slightly. If you fish under them they won’t go down after your bait. Use shiners until you find a pattern. Get a bubbler to keep shiners alive, and insulated bucket. Pay attention to where other fishermen are fishing, but don’t crowd them. Find a similar spot. Hire a guide if all else fails. One guide trip costs about the same as 4 unguided trips. Might be a bargain. Especially if you can find one that has livescope. Most guides are great teachers. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Sorry for the multiple postings. I’m using the app and not the actual thread online. There must be a glitch when posting. I fished Bayou Black again this morning. I didn’t catch anything but from talking to other boaters, no one else did much of anything either. Guess today just wasn’t the day the fish wanted to bite. I plan on going back out there again soon. The lakes here in the NOLA area all seem to have an algae bloom, they are green and and nasty. I assume the fish feel the same way about the algae as I do… avoid it! Thanks again

I had/have the same problem transitioning from bass/specs/reds. The best advice I got was, "If you fish half as fast as you normally do, you are still fishing twice as fast as you should."

I’m heading back out there tomorrow morning. I hope I get this monkey off my back soon! I will try and make it a point to fish slower. I do have a tendency to stay in one spot for 5-10 minutes then I’m off moving again down the canal. My philosophy has been of the cork hasn’t been touched in that amount of time, they aren’t there. Maybe I need to treat sacalait like you would treat a woman, soft, slow and have the presentation possible ?*??
