Thread: Southern Crappie Rods

When I transport my Southern Crappie rods, I use polyester velcro wraps I bought off Ebay. One at the bottom to secure the tip, and one down about a foot from the top to secure it. I also saw a hack using pipe cleaners as a wrap.

I can't see where that is whining. I merely point out that in my humble opinion there needs to be another guide near the end of the butt portion so they will stow properly. If you keep your rods joined there is no problem. However, if you break them down they will necessitate additional measures. The tip can extend past the butt and possibly be broken. Should I keep that quiet or let people know there could be a problem?

For what $35 bucks it sounds like a issue I can live with. I own 8 14ft Sc and love them, big cats are not a issue even with 4lb line.

Any rod that I keep "broke down" (storage or transport) is kept in a rod sock/bag and the tip is placed so that it does not extend past the other sections of the rod or handle (depending on how they're placed together). I don't own any SC rods, so I'm not familiar with them and whether or not all the sections are of equal length, as my 10' & 14' rods are .... but, if they're not of equal length, then perhaps when breaking them down one should insure that the tip section is wrapped in such a way that it's not extending past the reach of the other sections, even if that means that the female end of that section does extend past the other sections. In that way you will be protecting the tip, if that's your concern.

I transport my long rods, broken down & in socks/bags, in my boat's rod locker. I highly recommend rod socks/bags for this purpose, not only to protect the rods/tips, but also to keep lines from becoming entangled with other rods/reels/guides or any other item which may be stored in the rod locker. I prefer the nylon rod socks over the plastic weave sleeve types, because they have straps which most of the sleeve types do not.

I don't break my 14' down. Secured on the Driftmaster rod racks with short bungee cords with the black ball on the end. Too much trouble breaking down 8 rods every time I go fishing. They have been riding well the last 2 years. They don't come no better than Ed Duke that is for sure.

Some folks fish out of a14 ft john boat and singlepole oxbows. Nothing against Mr. Duke. There are ways to protect your rod tips but shouldn't be necessary. Last post on matter.
