Default Weekend Report- Really Light on Results- Novice Stuff

Bottom line- I went fishing two days- four fish total. One nice one, two mediums and a dinkie. I use my fish tank thingie so I can ride them around the lake before setting them loose.

Saturday- Started out pushing from the front. I ordered some new rods- (4) 16’ rods which arrive this week sometime, so still using my heavy surf fishing rods- 13’. They never indicated a single time. Made to cast five ounce sinkers at extreme distances, I am not disappointed in them. They have helped me practice. My surf fishing buddies are screaming to buy them now that I am all freshwater and all.

I was able to make some adjustments to my single rod holders and maneuver the ends of these heavy and stiff rods to almost touching, and laid my hand on top to cover both, as seen in pictures. That was when I began feeling bumps occasionally. Hook sets are free, so I began trying to set at every bump. Began catching some fish. Also got a good lesson in just how fast they can hit and turn back loose on yah. I wondered if they might be shad or bluegills as well. I opened up the jig hooks some using pliers and figured that might help, but it really didn’t seem to matter. Too slow.

This was the first day this year that I felt the Sun was actually roasting me. Like a rotisserie oven as the boat would twirl about. I worked on varying the speed and the fish thumped the lines best at the faster speeds. I could see the devils on my sonar, all about six feet deep in a ten foot lake. I set my jigs a little higher, and sometimes right at them. I played around some interchanging my jigs and such. Got a little system going now.

Watched an eagle trying to get his lunch when a rival flew over and there were some nasty words exchanged. Saw the local alligator hanging out mid lake. He just kind of sunned himself until he slipped under. Saw lots of things that were of interest. Met two very well seasoned men, in a Tracker boat. They bass fish the weeds and talked about stocked fish with reward monies for returning the tags. Ten pounders for $100 and such. I catch a ten pounder I will not require no bounty. Anyways it was nice to make some new friends.

I tested out my new hat.

You get the idea. It wasn’t all that bad to wear actually. Walmart was closing them out at $4. I think it is made for turkey hunting. Speaking of which, have you seen all the turkeys ? They are everywhere. Saw a huge gobble on the way to the ramp early morning. He was strutting and gobbling and had a fine harem in attendance. I was envious of him a little.

I decided to try pulling out of the back instead.

This went well enough and the lines didn’t tangle. I was able to kind of mess around some varying the amounts of line out. Came across a snag and saw how all that is going to go at 1.8 mph. Ended up landing an old plastic float people tied out as a marker of some kind. Mud came out so that told me about the bottom. No fish. I think pulling is easier to manage than pushing, because you don’t have to react so quickly. Learned that if I set the TM to straight ahead, that I can use the steering wheel to move the engine and drive. Hand controlled TM for now. I like it.

Sunday- Visited one of the premiere lakes in the region- Lake Orange. My wife was able to come with and she was impressed with how smooth I looked launching the boat. I must say I am getting much better. Got my system down now.

The lake is a virtual garden of hydrilla. Huge plumes go under the boat as if they were drifting clouds passing overhead. Here a patch there a patch. Makes me uncomfortable to just plow right through, but that is what everyone else seems to do. So we ride out and look for open water and start searching using the sonar. There wasn’t a fish anywhere. Can you believe that ? Not a one showed on the screen.

I set the rods out the front and motored over to a fishy looking area, and as we got close, the hydrilla did as well. TM bogged down, and all four rods started bending over, and she says I got a fish. Well.....technically no honey. I ain’t actually got a fish. So I clean up the mess on the lines and then the TM. Still no fish on the screen. After about an hour of this she decides that I am never gonna catch a fish and wants to look for alligators. Well OK. So I stowed my rods and such and we made for the shoreline.

We approached the Seven Sisters area and I stood on the casting deck and could keep the TM prop just in the water with her and the rest of the boat following. Took us thru some sick hydrilla farms. No gators but we saw fish swimming off as we got close.

Then we saw a boat come screaming out of the swamp and I knew that must be Cross Creek. I had read the book Cross Creek when I first moved to this area in 1997. Sat in a cabin I rented on Lake Santa Fe and really enjoyed the idea of living amongst the moss filled trees. The depth of the creek is 1-3 feet most everywhere we ventured. Surely there would be gators here, but they were all hiding from her.

As we went under the bridge we heard the craziest noise. Yup....rods were sticking up. Clackity clack clack they went. No damage to them, but I was a little embarrassed. We motored along slowly looking and after a while we turned back as she said she was getting hungry. Back under the bridge, only this time I looked like I expected it. LOL

I took this picture just then.

    Cool huh ?

Then we stumbled back upon the haunted house. She likes skeletons and such so it was sooooooo her. Then those silly peacocks got to squawking.

Then we headed back out to the main lake and she wanted to ride around some and work on her tan. I am finishing up the break in on the engine, getting ready for the 20 hour service deal, so I was happy to ride around some. I took a few pictures just of her sunning herself. She imagines herself catching a stupid fish. HAH.....there ain’t no stupid fish. I must say she loves the boat now that it isn’t cold when we go.

She had a great time, not catching any fish, and we want to explore more places. We live in Micanopy and I really want to take a cruise to Murphy’s Creek so we can spot some gators. A certain time of year they gather there and it is a sight to behold. My family owns a house on the canal near George’s with a boat slip. I also want to explore the scenic areas that are South of there on the river and such.

I would love to get some ideas of places to go, not necessarily to fish, but just a pretty boat ride. I mean it is her boat too.

Oh...when we finished for the day we wanted to eat at the Eagle’s Nest Restaurant. It is right next to the ramp, but about a five mile drive. Crazy how far you have to go to circle back to it. Food was good and the pricing seemed fair. Anyways I saw this map on the wall.

But all the numbers were gone off the map. Still looked cool though.

Good post. Seems you enjoyed anyway, even if the fish didn’t show up. Keep after it, you’ll be catching before long.

The new rods arrived a day early- Grizzly jigs was fast.

I noticed these are nothing like my heavy surf fishing rods. Very light very whippy and loooooooong. I added a reel to one and an earball sinker ( 2.1 ounce ) and the end bent right over. This means that I am going to have to drop down in sinker size- obviously.

Last night I added hardware to some of the egg sinkers I have, and now those will clip on and off for me, the same way as the ear balls do. Being able to switch sinkers by clipping on and off makes changing weights easy and fast. 1/2 - 3/4 and 1 ounce sinkers are now ready to test. I am thinking there will be an exact weight the rods will work best at.

I liked the way the earball sinkers trolled, and looking at the new sinkers they should match that. No tangles or wrap arounds. I added a small double swivel to the ends of the egg sinkers to allow for that.

From the rod there is a clip, the sinker attaches there, then the leaders clip onto the sinker’s extra swivel, jigs clip onto the other end of the leaders. Still learning with single jigs at this point. I like clips as they are fast to swap out and I can go from pushing out the front to pulling out the back in a few seconds. The jig follows the sinker’s path and the leaders are about 16 inches long.

It will be interesting to see what happens when I turn the speed up on these light weight rods and sinkers. I hope to start catching the fish that have been hitting and running on me. I also want to explore using sinkers for pulling jigs and crankbaits to limit the amount of line out.

I appreciate the words of encouragement- thank you very much.

Hey there Micanopy- Was wondering if your name was Mike and your wife's name was Opie?(Andy of Mayberry) j/k I know your town. Formal, personal welcome to FLA C.com. Been watching your transitioning to Fla. and your targeted new specie pursuits. It looks as if you have a certain degree of creativity(egg sinker conversion etc) The heavier weight scenario, especially in shallow Florida, is meant for vertical presentation- aka spider-rigging(pushing) typically done @.5 mph(+-) from boat bow. Florida l/l'g(pulling) is a more horizontal technique @1.0 mph(+-) from stern and sides of boat. While l/l'g Florida's waters, your lure depths are determined by line length, speed, size/numbers of jig/s, split shot/s and also whether you want to add a bobber into the equation because of weeds etc. It's nice to see, as new arrivals to our Sunshine state, that you folks have an open-eyed visitor's mindset(look at that/let's go over there/boy these mosquitos/gnats/no-see-ems are bad). Keep the faith, looks like your headin' in the right direction. With the assistance of C.com members, help is only a question away. Incidentally, pm(private-messaging) is a good way to sometimes get/give "secret info" from more "laid back" individuals! Hopefully, this and other reads will help shorten y'alls learning curve.

ps-Did you add barrel swivels to egg sinkers(via glue) or did you mean barrel sinkers?
Thanks for checkin' on me! CURIOSITY takes me there, SUCCESS ushers me back!

Well actually......she has lived her whole life in Florida, and I have been here for 30 years. I was a surf fishing fool for the past twenty, and have helped thousands of people catch fish at the beach. Did seminars and such and entered contests. I was very innovative and actually made some discoveries and inventions. A man wants me to do some YouTube video seminars for his channel. I taught him plenty and now he is off teaching others. Not just what I showed him of course.

So I am here because of the drive. Just got tired of driving an hour and 45 to get to the beach, fish, then another hour and 45 back. Then there are the idiots that can’t pass by without gawking at my stuff and wanting to engage me when I am trying to fish. Surf fishing is one of the hardest forms of fishing there is, and I wanted to try something new. Wanted to explore new places and test myself with new challenges. Wanted to learn something completely different. Tossing lures into weeds trying to drag out bass wasn’t gonna do it, but crappie fishing.....well now there is a challenge.

    I made these.

Ordered a mould to make bell sinkers with just a brass eye. 1/8 oz up to 2 oz. These will be useful to me and I can develop a system around them.

The new rods were wonderful today. They were perfect for the task at hand. With 1/2 oz sinker as shown, I clipped a leader about 16” long with a jig on the other end. I could see the fish strike the jig and there was time for me to set the hook. I was careful about swinging them into the boat afraid to snap a rod, but everything worked great. They were small to mediums so back they went. One was bleeding heavily and an osprey came behind the boat and snatched him away.

Made friends with some of the locals.

Then when the winds picked up I decided to pull jigs out the back of the boat. The new rods were excellent for that as well. I could see the fish strike. I also experimented with setting two lines out long, two shorter with light weights, and two close in with heavy weights. This allowed me to make tight turns and such with no tangles. Looked like a great way to fish.

The system I am imagining has a clip and rubber bead on the end of the main line. The bead prevents the clip from passing back through the end guide. Rod stores with line straight through guides. Attach bell sinker to clip. Attach leader to bell sinker and fish. For two jigs I am going to use a green wire leader, and instead of attaching the rod’s clip to the sinker, add that leader in between leaving the bottom jig as is. At the top of this leader, a four inch boom that will spin 360 with a swivel to handle the top jig. I am concerned with tangles when I land a fish in the boat and I suspect a mono leader would tend to wrap up and be tough to discern how to unwrap it after he flops about some. 4 lb test is tough to see unless it is close.

I felt the rods stepped my game up considerably. Just accepting what is discussed here and monkey see monkey do would probably be best for me, but I have to monkey around and re design the wheel. A wise monkey never monkeys with another monkey’s monkey. I think I got that right.

Anyways I am grateful for what Crappie.Com has done for me so far. Thanks.

I sent you a late night, last minute pm yesterday. If you were on Orange 2day, I was in the sister lake(lochloosa) thru the adjoining canal(see post). Looks as though you already possess the creativity skills to rapidly upgrade to a go-to crappie expert. You're layout is taking shape. Patience through the non-active doldrums eventually rewards successful reward!

monkey see is a great way to start. but I don't know a fisherman who has not tweaked the system to make it their own. I know I did. and still do.
