Thread: Longlining w/ Bobbers

How deep can they be used, and about what speed?
Would this be useful trolling over brush/blowdowns, etc?

I'm very interested in this technique as I need all the tips possible to be able to post a picture of what was caught this week.

I only use floats when trolling very slow in shallow water or over brush at a known depth I also use a float when trolling with minnow on a bare hook.

I have watched people use this technique over deep water casting to the gates of a dam. They would use bobber stoppers to control depth. That way the could fish vertically at any depth they wanted. One man had as many as 5 jigs below the bobber.

I still use floats, especially casting MINNOWS. There is just something about a float going under water that still gives me a thrill.

Buy them by the bag at grizzly. cheeeep and floats too. I have bags full of different style CAMAL floats. I don't need fancy.

This would be good to put on the beginner's and mentoring forum as another different ways to crappie fishing. Longlining with bobbers /corks /floats with jigs/ minnows/etc.

I have done the trolling with floats technique many times. It gives you a visual reference of where your lure is behind the boat. What you are actually doing is fishing vertically behind the boat at a distance. I use #6 pound Hi Vis test as my main line. My "Planer Board" bobber is a home made pool noodle slip float 1' x 2" that uses a 1/4 oz sinker to keep it at the same depth while trolling. Below the sinker is #4 pound test leader and a 1/16th jig with soft plastic minnow imitator. Here is how I make my noodle slip float and photos of my favorite soft plastic lure.
