    Default Depth Mark's on rods

    Hey all,
I'm sure this is not my idea nor nothing that hasn't been thought of, but while fishing with a buddy the other day, he asked me how deep I was. I said well, I think about 15 feet. I thought about it more as I got home. I use 9 foot Sam Heaton rods, and I used a paint pen to make a line at 1 foot and 2 feet from the reel face. So I can let my jig down to the butt of the rod for 9 feet and pull precisely each foot or 2 using the marks to go deeper. Shallower than 9 feet? Just start stripping using the marks as depth guides. $2 paint pen from walmart and about 2 minutes per rod.

I have some rods that came with those marks on them. Pretty handy and good idea for those that don’t have it.

Most of rods are marked. And I've heard that most crappie jigging rods the first eye is two feet from the reel.

that's a good idea. when i'm fishing and letting it down a certain depth, I lay the line out on the driveway and measure with a tape. Then mark 10, 15, 17, 18, 19 feet . etc down to 30 feet (sharpie). Pretty amazing that a certain depth will hit on multiple different trips over a season, but the marks do wash off periodically

I use "white out". You can scrape it off with a fingernail.

I like the way you think. Good idea. I hold the reel in the middle of my chest and grab the line right in front of the reel with the other hand. Then extend to the end of your arms length and for me that’s very close to three feet. 10 pulls is 30 feet, And so on. When deep jigging I used power pro yellow braid. Took a sharpie and marked the magic depth and on the next drop, just return to the mark and you’re good. Worked well for me and my guests.

works really well on depth specific specimens in the timber .
used to just whack them like a windmill with that technique in the mid summer .
also works well on piles to hold the jig right above the mess
