Thread: Lite wire vs sickle hook

I pour my own and use wide gap pan fish jig hooks. They stick really well and the eye locks onto the upper lip and can be a bugger to get out. Very seldom will they come of unless it's a bad hook set.

I bought a bunch of litewire jig heads a while back. After using them for 3-4 outings and having bigger fish straighten the hook I quite using them. Actually saw them the other day and got to thinking that I needed to get rid of them. Most of the straightening come when we were long line trolling so I may try vertical fishing with them before getting rid of them. Sickle hook will be on my rod 90% of the time I am fishing a jig.

You definitely should get rid of them. I'll even pay postage for you to send that garbage to me

From the namesake.....many years ago Eagle Claw was the manufacturer of extra fine Litewirehooks. They main customer was Simmons Sporting Goods. I personally ordered hundred of thousands from Simmons. Last couple years Mustad entered the market with Litewirehooks. In my opinion, Mustad Litewirehooks hooks are little stronger and better quality hook. I only use Mustad hooks unless customer specifies Eagle Claw. There is always a trade off......if you are fishing in trash, heavy timber, Litewirehooks are great to keep from losing many jigs......and spend time fishing rather than tieing on jigs. I personally use a combination of Gold Sickles but mainly Litewirehooks.......... Litewirehooker

Have you tried kirbing the lite wire? It makes a difference for me

Mine are probably 5-6 years old so most likely the Eagle Claw hooks.

I love Sickle hooks to start and have used them since them came out. I Bought a good size load of light wire heads to try, seemed like a good idea, but I hated tying on them. I tie with a lot of pressure and I can not tie one with out it bending with every wrap so that was my first problem and tried using more holding with opposite hand than normal, but it just was not what I liked. Then the coup de gras was one of my favorite crappie fishermen that I have tied a lot or Roadrunners for and I got him to try some light wire hooks on his regular jigs which at times he wanted. Well when he came back next time I ask him if he liked them, he said no because he lost more fish using it and one big slab he was trying to swing in came off being the hook. That was enough and the rest of my light wire hooks are still here.

Just fishing with them probably wouldn't bother me, but tying them would.

I still use lite wire for the most. I have tried sickle and found them brittle and prone to break.
