The split shot/minnow combo is deadly, especially when the fish are super finicky. I’ve never hid from them tho.

Yaker - you referred to him as old gentleman and old guy, maybe refer to him as geezer? All please honor and respect Team Geezer!

We do that ice fishing with minnow. It’s called dead sticking. One tip I can give is to use a limber enough rod and enough weight so it puts a slight bend in the rod. Like loads it up some. Then when you get an UP bite. You can see it. Crappie do that very often.
Same concept but open water. I have used my vexilar fish finder off a boat before and vertical jigged with my tungsten ice fishing jigs and jigging spoons. It worked good.

I use the Aberdeen and split shot a bit. I will set up on a jigging spot with the sun in front of me to avoid shadows. I betcha if the geezer wasn't catching fish he would pull out his paddle and start whooping them stumps. They will shew outta there like flies and come back in like hornets.
