I know mega chirp side image is suppose to be clearer than its fore runners but is it so much better it warrants an upgrade ?

Yes, look at some of my previous post for mega side and down images. I have Helix G2N units, the newer G3N units are even better!Name: S00134.jpg

If your happy with what you have then why change. A unit can only show you what is there. A flasher will show you fish, so will 2d. The level of detail you wish to see them is up to you.

What are you using now, I have Helix 12 Gen 1 and now just put on a Helix 12 Gen 3 it is a huge improvement as far as clarity goes which in turn makes fish easier to pick out. If I had to make a choice of between a gen 3 and 8-9 inch screen versus going to a 12 inch Gen 1 I would take the gen 1 IF you use SI as much as I do. Screen size is everything when it comes to SI and that is fact.

I used Lowrance total scan for years and was satisfied. With the live scope craze i tried Garmin all the way around. Garmins live veu sux..... I sold two the garmins that were on the dash and got a mega 12 si. WOW best thing i have done for me,the boat, and fishing in general.

That is what I was asking . Would you be able to identify "MORE" FISH , not just see the same ones better .

The biggest change I saw in the gen 3 was in down imaging. Was a huge improvement over gen 2 but yes side imaging is better and yes you will see more fish. That being said I recently purchased a 12 " garmin with livescope and it's a game changer. i still have humminbird on the boat but for the most part only using it for map and waypoints. Scott

Only watch out is the 7 inch series. 7 inch si all gens don't have a dedicated di. So if you want a si with dedicated di get no smaller than an 8 inch. Also the difference between gen 2 and gen 3 is better chirp and 20 percent more power to mega a little further.
