Should I be making the tails a lot bigger?

I like to use a little extra as I know it will be trimmed down by the crappie and it will last a little longer with a little more tail, but each person should tie it how they like.

Good looking ties. I think everyone likes the Roadrunner style baits and they plain catch fish. The question you posed about tail length is one for the fish. Skips ideas are tried over many years, and the store bought ones are tied to a standard someone determined at a corporate office. Tie 3 of a given color and make them different from each other. Flash, length, bulk, accent color and so on. As you fish them you’ll find one that really shines, and have some fun along the way. Keep us posted.
