What is Too Shallow to Pull Cranks

I was asked about a post I made in another thread that I thought the water depth I was recently fishing would have made pulling cranks tough.

I usually only pull 300’s at various depths, some as low as 6-8’ but in water 20’+. If I get below 18’ I start looking for deeper water. I’d hate to run across a snag and break off 4 or 5 $5 baits at one time.

So, how shallow of water will y’all pull in?

To me it's better to push cranks if fishing shallow.....you can better control your depth and also have lots less line out. That said I wouldnt fish cranks in waters less than 7fow. And to be sure....PICO square bill cranks are best for shallow waters. Not always , but most times if a square bill hits something it will bounce off without getting hooked.

There are several options for fishing cranks in shallow water. The new Pico Squarebill, Bomber 6A, Bandit 100 and 200, Arkie 220, or you can push or pull them on short amounts of line. One of my favorite tactics is to use a small planer board like an Off Shore OR38 to get the bait away from the boat in shallow water.

Dux is spot on. I have run planer boards over submerged grass with the bait running 2 feet deep or less.

I fought getting planer boards but picked up a couple for my Arkansas trip. I love them. Bet they work great on Washington with 8-10 foot of line below them in the spring

Any thing less than 10 ft , I spider rig if not single pole fishing .
