Yes, lose the bobber on the fly rod. Do the hand twist or slow strips with a sinking fly. Top water flies are usually better early and late in the day. Sinking fly is best most of the time.

Yes, watch the tip of the fly line. However, an 8” bluegill will just about take the rod out of your hands. “The thump” you get from a spinning rod can’t compare to “the jolt” you get with a fly rod. They slam the fly.
