I have certainly seen my share of moccasins around the lakes and rivers all of my life, so I can appreciate first hand how you always need to watch out for snakes. I've even seen snakes at many times of the year when you wouldn't expect to see one. Case in point: About a month or so ago I was burning a brush pile in the yard on a day when the outside temp was in the upper thirties range (you know... on the type of day when it was just cold enough that your wanted to be around a fire). I had pretty much gotten the pile to the place (after about an hour) where I could get close enough to begin walking around it and push the remaining wood along with the coals toward the center with a long handled metal landscaping rake. I happened to look down as I walked around the fire... and there was a FAT two and half foot copperhead trying to get away from the fire... but I guess he was too cold or smoked out to get any real movement going on.

Later as I raked the coals around... I discovered a hole in the ground about the diameter of a quarter where I assumed he was hibernating (under the brushpile) at least until it got too warm or he wasn't getting enough air and had to break camp. He, of course, is no longer with us and will no longer be needing that hole.
