Jerry,
I always says that I'm not built for heat or speed!
It was a rather warm 1 degrees in Lansing and due to the city emergency, not a car on the streets. You could have drove a zamboni naked the wrong way down Michigan and no one would notice.
It is a more tolerable -7 at the house now! At least the mosquitoes aren't out.

I live in Batesville, Dad is in in Elizabeth IL, my youngest is in Minneapolis, and my oldest is in Indianapolis. After seeing this early this morning on my phone, I realized I don't really miss them as much as I used to think...

My son lives there now. They are planning to sell everything move back south as soon as they retire. Even his wife agrees with that now and she was born in Chicago and years believed there was no place to live other than Chicago.
They tried to get me to move there and live with them when my wife died. Told them thanks, but no thanks. I will come and visit you in the summer and fall but I will never in a place that cold again.
I heard on the news today that a gas company was telling people to turn their thermostat down to 50* or lower and not use hot water from gas heaters. Yea, it's -20 outside and I'm turning down the heat! They said there may be gas outages. If a NG company in a town that has a monopoly on NG service, they should be required to be able to supply gas in such situations. It is life and death under these conditions.
We got warnings on our phones from the energy company to turn thermostats down to 65. I believe they are concerned with power usage.
Everyone is running supplemental electric heat just to help keep up. It is taxing the grid.
Minus 14 right now with real feel temps at minus 29.
I believe the issue was a gas producer in Michigan had a failure and had to stop pumping ng. They provided roughly 30percent of the ng for Michigan.
Around here we're being told to set our thermostats and leave them. Take them off program mode. The HVAC system isn't designed to maintain temps in the house when the outside temps get below 0. Yesterday it was -22 plus a wind chill. -44 degrees. I heard all sorts of unusual popping sounds during the night. This morning it was -17 degrees actual temp. I'm in Central Illinois. Sunday it's going to be 50 degrees. A 90 degree temp swing in less than a week.

Shorts weather in Michigan. Not for me, but you will see it.
Thankfully, I don't run NG or propane. Geothermal has advantages however, when it is this cold, it runs non stop.
We survived it, my wife works for the county government and they closed for 2 1/2 days, so we got our basement project almost done. I heat my house primarily with wood pellets/corn with propane as a back up. Wednesday night the pellets bridged up in the hopper so nothing flowed into the auger to feed the furnace. I woke up at 4 am because I was cold. Discovered the house was 62 degrees inside. I quickly was able to knock the pellets loose so they would flow again, but with -15 and a wind chill around -35 it took a while to bring the house temp back up.
Not as bad as the winter of 95 when I lived in Michigan’s upper peninsula......5 days no heat, no power, extreme cold. We had nowhere to go except plug in my portable generator to power a few lights and the microwave. Luckily I had a propane heater and several tanks to keep us a little bit from freezing. When the power came on I had 11 broken water pipes to fix...... then decided to move 300 miles south
