So.....you've got advice to go deep and slow. And that's not bad advice. On the other hand.... Water gets really cold where I fish, even ices over. Crappie can be caught in shallow water year round. I picked up a limit last weekend long line trolling in relatively shallow water while every other boat was pushing minnow deep. Weekend prior, I was tossing a cork and hair jig 4' and slamming big blacks. Water here is less than 40. Don't rule anything out.

We catch our biggest crappie in January and February on a corp lake in northern Oklahoma. Have broke ice a lot of days getting to our crappie holes. Water temp is running 34 to 37 deg now and it's 14 deg air temp this morning. All we use is double minnow rigs on drop shots over cover. We scan each brush pile to make sure it's holding fish then set double anchors out the back and front of the boat. We use 8 to 10 ft rods so we can keep some distance from the brush piles. What's really interesting about winter crappie is we will normally catch all the fish in one small area of the brush pile so when we throw out a marker it has to be precise.

Tossing a cork and jig sounds fun, was you targeting wood cover?
