When you tie a marabou jig and then cut the feather, can you use the leftover feather anyway? Sort of like how you cut hackle. Cut the tip then little v’s. Just want to use all of feather if possible.

I save the tips for something small, but use only very thin quill tips in my jigs. Maybe 5%-10% get a tip in the tail. All other just go in a bag for later and something small. Some use the whole feather bu using the tiny stuff or small Blood quills.

So do you cut marabou like the hackle to use the whole feather? The videos I’ve seen they just lay it down on hook tie it then cut it off.
I tear it off the quill a little at a time and make a stack until o feel theee is enough. Then I pinch it about where I am going to cut off the bad ends and a little of the barbules and to tie it in. I do not use the quill at all in most of my tails and this way gives maximum action!

Thanks Skip, that was what I was wanting to know. I've seen it used several ways but that seems to be the best for using all the feather.![]()

Just save the tips intact in a sandwich bag or something. I keep all my feathers in qt ziplock bags and inside them I have the parts I saved from cutting and I even keep the stuff I don't use due to too much White in it at times, but can still make a jig out of it and White is always florescent too! The tips I have in mind making some tiny jigs and using maybe 3 tips more or less and putting them together to make a short tail. I do have bags of these too, lol!
I keep my Hackle the same way, all in Ziplock bags.

Using all the feather, pinch the feather, measure, cut length to tie. There will not be a stem to hinder movement on a blood quill
