Got on Water around 9:30 am and began to look around for some perch. Found several schools but nothing promising. Birds weren't active at all. Finally found a bunch about mid lake in 53-55 foot of water. Caught several nice 1 pounders and then turning to small perch. Moved around in deep water only to find the same scenario of few at a time. Managed to get 62 medium to large size perch, 8 small catfish and two good 16 inch bass. The loons were enjoying all the small ones we threw back. Had a good show with them stealing from one another. Probably threw at least 20 back just to feed these crazy things. Everett, Monk and myself truly enjoyed our day fishing just soaking up the sun. Wind blew only for a short time and laid down to just flat water. Left around 3pm. The day was a good day to look at Monticello and try figure out how to fish it. Learning a little more each time. If you have not been there then you need to check it out it's really a great lake to explore.![]()

It's not the numbers or the size, it's the time spent on the water!BigDawgg LIKED above post
A fine report and catch. I’ve only been to Monticello once a number of years ago. A pretty lake, I don’t know why I haven’t looked at fishing more often.

I always thought of it as to far to go to even though I use to have property to hunt on just up the road about 10 minutes from the upper end.. Haven't looked for crappies yet but I know they are there. I will check them out one day and hopefully soon. If I find the crappie hole you know I'll have to keep it a secret for a while or until someone see us!If you ever go, just be careful and not run wide open, there are a few hazardous places there not marked.

We tried trolling for crappies 1 time this past spring. Only caught cats on our jigs & minnows. It does look like a great place for crappies but it is a hard lake to figure out. Seems like the more we fish it, the worst off we do. Like today, we did not mark anything that looked like cats on the bottom. Even the perch were hard to hook.
BigDawgg thanked you for this post
We gonna try the small lake in the morning

Glad you went to try again. It looked that way to us too until later in the morning, then we found small schools moving, so we trolled around real slow to find what we did! Only thing I figure is that it was to bright with the sun and bait was holding close to the bottom. It seemed to me that the day Remus and all of us were there it was cloudy and chilly. Once we found fish under the birds it was easier to catch them. Yesterday no birds flying at all and it was just to nice of a day! Loons were just popping up and down and not gathered up.Maybe we'll hit pay dirt one day!
